[EDIT] - You can go to a link where you can read my first try at it. You'll find it in the 13th post of this thread. Feel free to scroll down and if you read the whole play then that is totally appreciated. Thanks and I hope you enjoy it.
Hello. Currently I'm volunteering for a theatre festival and practically every night after my work I take in one of the many plays going on. Two days ago it hit me a play about the behind the scenes world of pro-wrestling would be very interesting. I got alot of time so I want to take stab at writing it. The only thing I've thought about is making the story line blur and mix with what's going on with the characters on camera/in-ring and what's going back-stage. I feel compelled to look at the Randy Savage/Hulk Hogan Mega-Powers feud for some influence but really not sure about that. I'd like to make the wrestling play dramatic with spots of comedy within.
I'm just wondering if anyone here at the W-Crap have any suggestions I could use for characters and plot lines?

I know it's old news now, but the Edge-Lita-Matt Hardy love triangle story would probably make a pretty good play. It certainly wouldn't be lacking in drama.

Making it all backstage would make it easier. Possibly in the locker room, as wrestlers come and go during an indy show, and discuss both wrestling and their lives. There could be an injury, the State Athletics Commisioner could show up, etc. Tons of possibilities.

The whole Kurt Angle/HHH/Steph love triangle (with extra Rock, Jericho, Shane & Test) or Triple H's 10 month World Title ego trip.

My suggestion is using the example of someone who peaked about twenty years ago but still continues to wrestle on independent shows. This comes from hearing about guys like Greg Valentine who I'm always surprised are still going and maybe it's because it's the only way they know to make a living or they love it too much that they don't want to retire.

Yeah, Have it be backstage at an indy show, and have it be a who's who of wrestlers, from old washed ups, to indy vets, a sleazy promoter and maybe even someone making their debut tonight. I wouldn't use real wrestler's names if I were you(both legally, and you can make up anything you want). For added drama maybe have the debuting kid die in his match or something. That is, if you want it to be a drama. It'd be kinda hard to make a play thats backstage at a wrestling show into a comedy.

. It'd be kinda hard to make a play thats backstage at a wrestling show into a comedy. I don't know about that. With all the ridiculous gimmicks you find in wrestling, especially at the indy level, things could get pretty funny pretty quickly. Just exaggerate the personalities by a lot, have the main character be the straight man dealing with all the craziness, maybe as a promoter dealing with eccentric wrestlers, and hilarity ensues.

Yeah, but you could do that in any situation. I mean to accuratley depict the backstage goings-on. Wrestling is a pretty depressing business backstage.

Thanks for all your suggestions. There all greatly appreciated. I like the indy show ideas but I also like the idea that short monologues can be set as television promos giving a chance for the audience to get to the character. For some reason the old AWA keeps coming to my mind.

I suggest the gym, tanning salons, and waxing.
If there is a play about Pro wrestlers the playwrights have to actually look like wrestlers?
I mean there's like 5 porn stars now that look like Batista

I mean there's like 5 porn stars now that look like Batista I would like to know about these men for...an experiment. I'm not gay, or anything. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

This comes from hearing about guys like Greg Valentine who I'm always surprised are still going and maybe it's because it's the only way they know to make a living or they love it too much that they don't want to retire. I kinda went with CaptainFall's idea and mixed it with my earliest memories of watching pro-wrestling which were the early 1980's A.W.A. Hulk Hogan/Nick Bockwinkle fued. I must make it obvisious that WrestleCrap had a huge influence on the story-line too. I finished with my first draft of the play. Not really sure what I'm going to do with putting it on stage somewhere. I'm currently working as a talent scout (A&R rep) in the music-entertainment industry and I'm shrudely thinking why don't I take sometime to develope huge connections in the entertainment business world and then try to get a good video production house to make it into a one-off TV deal or indie film straight to DVD kinda thing. I'll have to wait and see. Even though I've already contacted local wrestlers in my area about this new play I wrote and I've gotten nothing but great response from them. A number of them have expressed they'd like to be in it and that makes me thrilled to hear that. Oh I hope they can act.... Hope this link works! It ain't perfect but here's the play I wrote: blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=82723729&blogID=204315554&MyToken=c47e4a95-70bb-4cd2-a92d-1c1e49f626d4

Personally my goal in life is to create Cthulu: The Musical.
As for this one one thing that got me iritated was the names. Vance? Gord? It's kinda obvious, try to hide it more so only people who know the story can make it out.

I might consider doing this too. I won't nick any ideas from you guys in particular, just might consider trying to write a Theater Play of sorts along with a Screen play.

Personally, my idea for a wrestling film is that all the wrestlers who have died young or ill were just kayfabe deaths, and they're really all in an old folks home (a lot like Bubba Ho-Tep, so sue me). A young, upstart promotor, discovers this, and tries to make the coup of the wrestling century by bringing back all the "dead" wrestlers to fight his young, crewcutted, steroid wrestlers. The old guys agree to do it, as a last hurrah, but the young promotor decides to have his young guys shoot on them old guys in a tournament, to make the new generation look better.
The old guys fight back, and go out on their feet, like true heroes...

^ Not a bad idea. I think somebody will watch that. If I can be quite bold I seem to get an impression there is some snobbery in the world wrestling fandom of what you know about and what you don't know about let alone actually has seen. Am I right about this? As for this one one thing that got me iritated was the names. Vance? Gord? It's kinda obvious, try to hide it more so only people who know the story can make it out. It's dilemma for me. On one hand I want to make a production that true wrestling fans will enjoy but on the other hand I want to show the inner working (as simplitic as it's written) of a pro-wrestling event to the casual fans and one who are not fans at all.
