But why? Why would they go through all the effort just to blow it all off?

Incidentally, I liked Dark City. That doesn't mean a gimmick should be based on it, though.

But why? Why would they go through all the effort just to blow it all off? I believe what happened, and I may be wrong here, so someone correct me if I screw up, was that the gimmick was already planned to debut before Russo took over, hence the vignettes and all that. Then, when Russo took over the booking, he decided he didn't like it, so he had Dustin do a worked shoot over the whole thing and just be himself. Still a waste, but at least that's an explanation.

Yeah, that's pretty dead on Spankymac. He squashed the gimmick, but still, somehow, they decided to, purely for the blow off, use the big entrance. Like I said, that's in line with WCW thinking though. Van Hammer gets his "debut" entrance, complete with a prefessionally made rock video for his entrance, which ran the company 25 large.

Wasn't Goldust supposed to return in WCW as Plutonium?

wouldn't have worked had they kept the gimmick. Look at the makeup and tell me with a straight face that he could pass as an Undertaker like heel.

It's a shame he didn't bring the Pale Horse with him when he came out.
That vignette that had the VO that said "...And he rides on a pale horse, named....The Pale Horse" was hilarious. They tried to be so serious on that one, and they failed.

I don't think the world was ready for a pedophile gimmick back then nor are they ready now.

Cant really add to what has already been said, but yeah, he was supposed to be some kind of uber heel, and when Russo entered the picture, he squashed it. and not only did he squash it, he made the angle into a quasi-shoot

Lo at 2:22 after Seven says "Goldust nearly ruined my career" some guy in the audience shouts "you never had one!"

I like how all of the signs in the crowd are WWF related in some way.

Goldust nearly ruin his career. No it saved it. Which is why two years later he returns to the WWE as Goldust.

You know as I watched this video, it really made me kind of upset actually.
For one, it WAS a cool entrance I thought. A lot of people are saying that Seven would have been wrestlecrap if they kept the character, but I don't think it necessarily would have. It was potential crap sure... but they could have done it in such a way that it could have worked. I mean, Seven's look and entrance is no more over-the-top than Boogeyman's. It's also no more over the top than Pirate Burchill's. If they made Seven a character more of a guy who THOUGHT he was a ghost even though we all just thought he was insane, it could have worked. Instead, they turned Dustin into the era's 5,432nd guy to wrestle "as himself" and do nothing more than win a few midcard matches.
Secondly, that "shoot" was awful. Dustin said that Goldust nearly killed his career. And I have no doubt that WCW scripted him to say that. Looking back on it, Goldust WAS his career. And rightfully so, since he was never even as CLOSE to being over in any other gimmick he has ever done. Having him denounce Goldust was just WCW firing another shot in the Monday Night War.
