He'd be in my personal Top 10 all time list at this point. I do believe that where there is smoke there is fire as far as the backstage politics go some of the time, but he is far from the only one in the wrestling business to have that said about him.
A great one to be sure. But he'll always be over shadowed by The Rock and Steve Austin, and rightfully so.

A very solid wrestler and personality that never quite achieved the status of his contemporaries in Steve Austin and The Rock, but nevertheless developed a following and contributed greatly to the WWF/E. While at times he seemed to be pushed to the detriment of everybody else, he also showed acts of extreme selflessness on occasion as well.
He's also one of the most dedicated men in wrestling today. He's torn his quad twice, and both times he finished the match that he was in.

He will be considered one of the best, not a Hogan by any means, but a big time player. Though the whole ''holding guys down'' persona he's gotten can really hurt him. So I guess time will tell.

I see Triple H having the same legacy of Michael Shumacher. Arguably one of the best of his generation, his legacy will be tainted because of who he affiliated himself with, to a point where his legacy will be more talk of backstage politics than anything he ever did (For Shumie, it's the whole Ferrari forces anyone affiliated with him to lose so that Shumie can win fiasco that happened a few years ago. Cast a huge shadow on his career, it did.) And that gave us brazilian tons of laugh with Rubens. "The one that always come behind the german" we say.

In 20 years fans will look back on wrestling and will keep reading HHH's name, but not really knowing what exactely he did or who he was. He will be more of a name than a legend. I think you hit the nail on the head. He's going to be historically significant, but little else.

I kinda doubt that, considering he'll prob beat Flairs world title record (or come very close to it) and he'll always be involved in the WWE in some capacity, he'll (as well as the WWE) make sure everyone knows him/what he did.

I admit it I am a HHH Mark. That being said I would put him near the bottom of the top 10. Solid in-ring and mic work and lets face it people like him or not one tough mother*%&^$.

The irony to me is that the wrestlers known to be in the absolute upper echelon; Hogan, Rock, Austin etc are all now largely inactive. Come back to this thread six months-1 year after HHH retires, and see what his legacy is then, when rather than being part of the product WWE is churning out, HHH is part of the ever increasing list of people we would like to see come back.
Nostalgia is a funny bugger to factor into an equation.

ONe of the best wrestlers of all time and out of his generation, possibly the best performer.
Nobody can touch Triple H as a complete package as far as I'm concerned.

He'll always be remembered for Katie Vick....
No seriously, the best heel from the late 90s on. He'll never get quite the dap of Austin or the Rock for the Attitude Era, but that might be because he was the heel 80% of the time. plus he's been around so much we haven't had time to miss him (until recently).
And to all the "I can't remember a great HHH match", I submit HHH/Cactus Royal Rumble 2000, HHH/Austin No Way Out 01, and Wrestlemania XX/Backlash 04 for starters.

Probably in my top 5 favourite wrestlers of all-time.
I think he'll be remembered by like a few of you said, overshadowed by The Rock & Austin. I'd take HHH over both of those guys anyday.
I don't like the whole DX 2006 thing but I seriously can't wait until he comes back.

Triple H is my favorite wrestler, so I might be a bit biased, but...
I think his legacy as a character is that strong, killer heels are needed for a good product.
I think his legacy as a person is what's already been said. In an industry where connections are everything, he has the ultimate one.
Finally, he never reached the heights of Rock or Austin, but is that necessarily a bad thing? Rock wants nothing to do with wrestling and Austin's life is largely a mess. They both had (relatively) short careers that transcended wrestling. Triple H will be at the top of wrestling for years to come.

Triple H is the most underrated worker in wrestling. He has the look, the charisma, the in ring ability, the Pedigree that everyone will assimilate with him (see, Tombstone - Undertaker, Legdrop - Hogan, Sharpshooter - Hart), the business sense, and much more. He can work any style match and do a solid to great job depending on who he is working with. He paid his dues, he worked his ass off, and he deserves to go down as one of the greatest.

I think he'll be remembered more-so for his backstage politics and marrying the bosses daughter, rather than being remembered for being a great worker.
Which is actually a shame, say what you will about him, but you can't deny he's one of the best workers in the business.

HHH is the best worker of his generation (behind the curtain). There's no doubt that he would have been world champ regardless of who he's married to,but i don't think that he'd still be The Top Guy in the company if he wasn't married to Stephanie.
