The Vader flop thread, made me think of this. Whats guys when you first saw them you thought they would be champion?
Val Venis, comes to mind. This guy had the looks, charisma, and talent to become champion. Of course WWE wasnt going to make a porn star champion, but over time they pushed the porn star thing in the backround. He turned heel, started a fued with Foley and I thought Venis was gonna get a major push. But the fued went no where, Venis then cut his hair and it was a Samson effect. Joined RTC, but got lost in the mix, besides a midcard run as Sean Morley, Val has never gotten out of the undercard. Kinda odd to think I thought that guy was gonna be champion.m

Off the top of my head, Razor Ramon.
On the other hand, I never thought I'd see "Diamond" Dallas Page as WCW World champion.

-Its been said, but WWE REALLY missed the boat on Lance Storm.
-William Regal, had he not been out that entire year, probably would have gotten JBL's push from 04.
-Carlito before WWE killed his momentum. I can't really see him getting it back.

I know RVD won it and "blew it" but considering how over he was during the alliance angle I thought he would get it much much earlier.

Carlito before WWE killed his momentum. I can't really see him getting it back. I must sadly agree with this, he went from being one of my top favorites to getting the Conway Pop from me I was also pretty sure Cena would see it eventually that's all I can think of now, more than usual, it's the people I'd never expect to get the title that do

I honestly believed, for a few short weeks, that Rob Conway had a shot.

For whatever reason I also thought Marc Mero was gonna get a run, but then he cut his hair too, and the whole wife beater angle started.

I always thought that Regal would have had the title by now.

Ahmed Johnson was a great example, especially during the time. He had the presence and the push as champ, but with injuries and not staying in shape, he ruined it.

Tazz. The way they hyped him coming in, then he beats Angle at the Rumble. I thought he was gonna be the forth man at WM 2000 with Jericho, Angle, and Benoit. But he went the way of the hardcore title instead. He didnt do much after that, got injured and now is a half rat announcer.

Ahmed Johnson Carlito (looking at the unmotivated, stalling-out version of him NOW? No way.) Jeff Hardy (not that I wanted him to, but there were quite a few times it looked like WWE was about to put it on him in an "Anything can happen!" moment) Ken Shamrock, before they started having him do that "Oh no, Internal Bleeding!" bit every time someone hit him...

Raven in either wwe or wcw. I was pulling for him but they killed his character in wcw and he got lost in the crap that was the wwe hardcore division. .

Being champion has more to do than just being over imo. Verne Gagne in the WWE DVD discusses on how he was champion in his own promotion and how Larry Zybysko were champs. One reason was that he felt the title would be protected better along the lines of one that won't leave the company.

I still think we'll see Finlay and Regal both have it at least once by the time they're through.
Val Venis for sure I think could have been a main eventer, I was hoping that the Chief Morley character could have been the final step towards it. I agree with Rican that more could've been done for Storm but I don't think they'd have ever gave him the Title. He would be so awesome to have in the current IC Title scene though.
Goldust I thought would end up with it too.

Yeah, the fact that Goldust didn't win it at some point during his incredible 96-98 run baffles my mind. He was such a great heel.
