I'm not one for long "rants" on my observations, so I'll make this blunt and short.
A thread pops up every so often, showing the clip of John Cena vs. Brian Danielson on an edition of Velocity from his very begginings with the rapper gimmick. Thing is, this wasn't a bad match. Many people see it as "proof Cena can work." Really, this was a standard Cena match at the time. He put on shows of this quality most of the time during this period of his career. And don't say Danielson carried him, because he didn't.
Fast forward about three years, and we see John has all but abandoned his rapper gimmick, he's got a blinged-out strap, and he's hated. Mainly because people just don't like his matches. I have to say, looking back at his early matches and looking at his recent ones, it does seem like there's been a decline.
So what happened? It seems obvious to me that when he was handed the belt, he wasn't ready. He knew it. And I think he pretty much let the pressure get to him. I truely believe that he felt so much weight being put on him, he couldn't work as well as he could. I mean, when you're the top guy, the man who is carrying the company on his back, the man selling out arenas and merchendice, the man everyone's talking about on the internet, the man everyone's looking at, there is copious amounts of pressure on you. And when you feel you're not ready for that, your work will suffer. I don't want to say he's not confident, but I think he's quite unsure of himself, and if given the choice, I dare say he doesn't want the belt.
That's it.

He handled the title run pretty well. I think he was ready. He was the most over man in the company and still is I think. He is getting Hogan like pops. The problem is he was told to be a brawler and not a wrestler. John Cena is the most entertaining man in WWE and I dont care what people say.

Blunt and short, just like Taz.
It is true, he was pretty good in his earlier days.

I don't know a single person that can say the Cena now is better than the Cena before. And it's true. It seems he's not ready to be the top guy no matter what the reactions are from the crowd.

cena needs to find himself. he did the rapper gimmick, but that can only last so long. after that he just sort of bounced his gimmick around before settling on something he did in a movie. he needs to find his own personality and run with it, then he will be the star that he can truely be.

Well, he basically is playing himself as of now. I don't hate it, but I agree he needs something to complete himself.

I say what he needs is a heel turn to complete the package. Not saying the only way he can be a decent preformer is to be heel, but I think one turn could make his character come full circle. I don't know.

The one thing that WWE hasn't truely capitalized on about John Cena, is his unique personality. John Cena, in real life, is a jackass. Not the kind of jackass that's bad though, but the kind of jackass that everyone loves, that's extremely goofy, and will make fun of himself just to mke everyone else laugh, and he's hilarious. John Cena isn't doing anything wrong right now. To make an extremely long story short, Cena is just doing his job by wrestling as the "Golden Goose". It requires a certain style that draws money with regular Marks and casual fans alike, but is hated by Smarks. But Smarks are only 12% of the audience, so money is being made. But this style has a way of limiting your moves depending on who you face, or your overall style has to be altered from before, with a little bit of this and a little less of that. It's not that Cena "Isn't doing" this or "Isn't doing" that, It's not so much his choice, as it's his job. I haven't seen anyone else handle the pressure as well as Cena sinse Austin,Rock,Hogan, or HHH.

From all reports, John Cena has remained a down to earth guy, despite being the champ of one of the brands for almost two years, selling tons of merchandise and starring in his first movie. How is that "not handling the pressure" of being champion?
I get the point that maybe you think his style has regressed, but I don't see how that leads to the conclusion that he's not ready to be champ. Eddie Guerrero was maybe the best worker they had when he was champ, yet he truly wasn't able to handle being the top guy to the point where he wanted to drop the belt. By your logic, he should've been able to handle it with ease.

Sells more merchandise than anyone and doesnt seem to be under pressure.

Well, I think he'd be more comfortable if he didn't get mixed reactions.

I actually recall a shoot interview with Spike Dudley where he said that Cena was a good guy, and that Cena himself honestly didn't want to be WWE Champion yet.
