When Davey Boy came back to the WWF in 1999, rather controversially after Owen's death, i just felt the WWF made him look like a colourless jabroni in generic jeans and generic music. I was a fan of Bulldog's promo's in the past, but he was mostly mute. Even if he did win the European title, but that means nothing these days. Don't get me wrong, he was given a great start, when he won the Hardcore title, then wanted the world title, the one he's never had. After Unforgiven everything was downhill, giving him the jeans etc. I recall he had a storyline with Steve Blackman which never went anywhere and was cut short. Can't remember if it was at the point he had to leave in 2000 because he had a drug problem. If he was still alive today and in WWE, he would've been given more respect and bring the "British" back into his gimmick. Since the Hall of Fame, the WWE give more respect to the legends. It was sad that tenure was his farewell one due to the tragic consequences 2 years later. In his other WWF tenure's he was always seen as a main player, being in Euro or hardcore title race doesn't constitute a main player in my book.

I wouldn't quite call it a flop, but it wasn't really a success, either. Sadly, he was just lost in the shuffle.

I agree that he had a great start in his last run, but, the second he got Rock Bottomed into the dog poo....

See, I don't think the character was bad at all. I think it worked, and he played the psycho-heartless bastard role quite well. He needed something to hang a hat on besides being British.
But the problem was, you could see he was a hobbled, burnt-out shell of his former self. He had no passion, and he was in poor physical shape from injuries and drug abuse.
Jed Shaffer ~I liked the theme music for his last run.

He did a great job on the character side, but as Jed Tilde-Schaffer points out, he couldn't work at all in that last run, and it all wound down quite sadly. I nearly went to see him at a UK show after his release and before death, but it was for All Star, who don't put on my kind of show (more for the kid, really), so I gave it a miss.

Yeah, it was weird. But the first moments from that part of his career that popped into my head were getting Rock Bottomed into dog poop and throwing the trash can across the room and hitting Stephanie causing her amnesia and forgetting all about Test...like the rest of us have. (I had to ) I voted Flop.

I voted flop, since he clearly meant nothing on the roster (compared to his prior runs) but I just have to say that his last run in the WWE just...bewildered me.
It'd be like if Jericho came back, won a minor title, made an unimpressive appearance in a Royal Rumble.......and then just vanished.

His last run was Vince being nicee and helping him out after WCW crippled him and proceeded to fire him. So I never had much hope for his last run. Remember he was hospitalized in a full body cast for a month before he came back.

He was in terrible shape, and by all accounts existing only through a cocktail of drugs to alleviate the pain he was suffering. He did get pushed at the beginning, with this heel turn in the Rock-HHH match and his participation in the 6 pack challenge (is that the correct match I'm thinking of?), but after his match with the Rock was pretty miserable, his push was scaled back.
If he didn't have the prior back injury, who knows how well he could have done. We could have gotten to see some pretty exciting matches with HHH, Austin and others. Although that being said, his run in WCW (prior to the back injury in 1998) was pitiful, so perhaps we wouldn't have.
I prefer to remember the Davey Boy Smith from the British Bulldogs era to the Hart Foundation (v2) era, rather than his last run. So many great memories (Bulldogs-Hart Foundation, the Bret Hart classic in 1992, matches with Vader in 1993, the Hart classic in 1995, the superb match he had with HBK in 1996) to look back on.

I preferred the jeans look to the cape, tassels, and Bo Derek hair.
But that's just me.

I'll go out on a limb and say his first run wasn't anything to write home about either.
A gay accent and a girl dog was all that guy had going for him to stand out.

It wasn't really a flop.
He wrestled for the WWF title in 99.

I hated the look with the jeans..he needed the union jack tights, the jeans made him look like generic brawler #900
i had heard something from someone that the reason for the attire change was that Daveys legs were in such a mess (in a way that even long tights couldn't cover for too long)

Reason it sucked - Rock Bottomed into Dog poo - Became a trainer of the "Mean street Posse" (Very short though)
He did however knock out Steph so that gains some brownie points

Ok, using my memory, I remember him pushing a crate trying to hit the Rock. That and he teamed up with the MSP. How is that not a flop? Yeah he wrestled for the title like once, but they made him a heel....which was not needed at the time. I loved how in 99-00 there was one face, and his name was Rock.
