We all know there is wrestlers that are great but have that one run that is crap. And sometimes that one run is all people see.
For example... to most under say 35 Dr Death Steve Williams is the Brawl for All old guy.
But go watch any of his Mid South,WCW,Japan stuff and you see one of the best to ever step in the ring.
What are some other examples?

It feels like history has somewhat erased Ken Patera's earlier work where he was an effective bleach blond haired heel in favor of his frankly awful babyface run in the WWF circa 1987-1988. He was never necessarily the strongest promo, but the guy's mic work deserves a better legacy than the infamous "red headed stepson" interview with Mean Gene that everybody's familiar with.
Rhonda Sing was a regional based variation of this as the limitations of the 1995 women's division and the comedic emphasis of the Bertha Faye gimmick meant most American fans never really saw the skill or intensity she had as Monster Ripper.

Mike Shaw in the WWF. Bastion Booger was an embarrassment. Mike Shaw in Stampede was a boss.
Buddy Rose in the WWF was known for the Blow Away Diet, didn't even scratch the surface of the talent he showed in the AWA and in Portland.
This is going to turn into a long line of 'Vince misused these guys' stories, ain't it?

Dirty White Boy Tony Anthony
Amazing talent in TN and AL and really all over the deep south.
But most know TL Hopper the wrestling plumber.

Trying to come up with some that aren't just WWFE bashing and think I have a few...
The Sandman as Hak in WCW didn't have the same connection with thw audience that he did in ECW and that was key for him.
Mikey Whipwreck as well, he was just another small guy.
If you only knew of Magnum Tokyo for his teaming with Disco Inferno and Alex Wright, you need to seek out Toryumon and Dragon Gate.

Even if they called him a different name, I would have loved to have seen DWB on the national stage doing his somewhat crazy, down and dirty redneck routine. Especially if he brought Mr. Ron Wright with him. If you're only knowledge of Ole Anderson as a booker is the Black Scorpion, you're missing out on some all-time great stuff.

Brian Pillman when he was in WWF That's the example I was going to use. Outside of his mic skills I wasn't that enthused with his WWE run, my brother was more into WcW than I was at the time and he told me that Pillman's awesome and bigged him up match wise and everything. Then, well we all know the story with Pillman don't we.

Then, well we all know the story with Pillman don't we. Same here. They really built him up in WWF and they had a press conference to announce his signing. My friend kept saying how aresome he was. He is gone for a long time (Car accident), comes back and keeps getting attack by Austin, leaves, comes back and joins the Hart Foundation, has a few crappy matches, with the exception of Canadian Stampede ME, which was good without much input from him, and then passes away.

Another WWE one, I’m afraid… going to bat for KENTA to my son who’d only ever seen Hideo Itami was an effort

He looks like Friar Tuck in that Disney cartoon with the animals! We’ll dress him up like that and make him dance! A fat guy dancing is always funny! Call creative services and get them started on it!” “(sigh) Yes, Mr. McMahon.” I imagine it went something like that.

Harley Race in WWF. Who could ever be introduced to that version of Harley and understand why people thought he was considered by many to be the goat? An old man with bleached hair and a massive gut wearing a cape and crown. It was as bad as Dusty's polka dots.

It's weird to think that during Tyson Tomko's career, his WWE run had him be the bodyguard for Christian. When he went to TNA, he had quite a run there and was involved in storylines more.

Sgt. Slaughter from his time as the Iraqi sympathizer heel/I want my country back face & then commissioner role. Later I saw the early 80s WWF/Mid Atlantic heel runs and the 1984 WWF face run and I realized that he was frigging great.

The Sandman as Hak in WCW didn't have the same connection with thw audience that he did in ECW and that was key for him. It certainly didn’t help that they hyped him up as a hardcore master, then in his debut he loses a hardcore match to Bam Bam Bigelow. Way to say, ”We absolutely don’t care about this guy and you shouldn’t either”, WCW.
