It annoys me no end when wrestling feds fall all over themselves to hype any real amateur wrestling or athletic experience guys have.
Kurt Angle is the worst example of this. To be fair, I guess you can't have a guy who won a gold medal at the Olympics and just not mention it, but "legitimate athlete" gimmicks just make wrestling as a whole look like it has a big inferiority complex, IMO.
The whole thing is a symptom of how uncertain the wrestling industry as a whole is right now regarding the death of kayfabe. "OK, so it isn't real, but if it was, THIS guy would actually be really good at it!"
Does this bother anybody else?

I don't think so, because they are basically hyping up the fact that the person would be very skilled in mat wrestling, submissions, and all that other amateur wrestlingey stuff.
Kind of like how you'd hype up someone's martial arts background to get over their kicks/chops/whatever.

In a way yes. When they bill whomever as the "best real athlete" or "best pure athlete" it does make wrestling look bad. However if its done in the "best amateur trying to make it in the pros" type way then I tend to like it.
