He defended his title against the Barbarian at Halloween Havoc. The Barbarian? Really? You guys couldnt find ANYONE else? Really, WCW......The Barbarian? HE was your choice? There was nobody else on the roster who could have been a better pick? Wow...... I would've had them do a rematch of the Clash of Champions match with Cactus Jack from the previous month, but this time it would be a "Falls Count Anywhere" match or something. Barbarian does look intimdating, but doesn't look like a guy who should be challenging for the World Title,IMO. Agreed. That would have made sense. Instead Ron's run was pretty much doomed from there on

Ron's run was truthfully........and I hate to say it, a political move. Bill Watts, was (is) considered a racist piece of trash to Turner Management, giving Ron the title (not that he didnt deserve a run, he did) was to appease the higher ups. Simmons, even mentioned that fact in an old interview. It wasnt meant to be a quality run, like I said before.

I think I saw this on one of the WCW recap shows (Power Hour?). That was the only WCW show on in Toronto back then, as I didn't get TBS.
I wasn't a WCW fan at all, but I liked when Simmons won it. Big surprise for me.

He played a huge part in the rise of JYD.

just a random thought, you hear how miserable everything was for WCW during the early 90's (and I don't doubt that it was a mess backstage), but every video I see from the early 90s has hot crowds and pretty good matches.

That was a great moment I was glad to see Ron Simmons win the world title it would have been nice if he got a better run with it though.

You have a point, but it wasnt all gravy back then. ("WE WANT FLAIR" chants anyone?)

Not to defend Watts..
But he was a good enough person to put his personal feelings aside to push guys like Junkyard and Simmons. For a southern man who probably grew up in a southern family when a lot of the south was very bitter about the end of segregation.. that's very respectable.
Unfortunately a lot of the time it's just growing up in that environment and it's just the views you're raised with. I do think that when you get older you should be able to realize it's not true.. but changing any lifetime behavior pattern is a very hard thing to do.

did ron simmons win it on world wide or saturday nigh he won it at a house show in baltimore i believe. ron had a decent run as champion, dusty and watts wanted to give him a push and they did. simmons was a stud then and the unexpected title win was something different, not a usual squash match during that wcw era.

I have nearly all the PPV's/TV tapings from that period onward and it only occured at the Bash. Probably because he was advertised and Jim Herd in his infinite wisdom decided to fire Ric Flair.

I dont think it was a matter of being a good person. It was a matter of being "smart" enough to save your own skin and do business the right way.
