Remember this show Saturday mornings on USA?For a brief moment it was my new favorite show.It was a live interactive show where fans could fax,e-mail or call in & talk about Wrestling.
This a was at the height of the Monday night wars.Originally I thought this was going to be another boring & lame rehash show recapping & showing everything that happened on RAW the previous Monday & nothing new.
But with the viewer participation it was exciting.I was shocked on the debut episode when Sunny read faxes from fans asking about WCW & the NWO.That was taboo back then for WWE to even acknowledge or mention their competition.
So the show was brilliant originally. Then some of the "live" calls appeared staged like when Vince Mcmahon was a guest talking to a caller about Steve Austin attacking Brian Pillman in his home & why weren't the police called. But that was okay.It helped forward the story line.Plus Vince Russo would appear on there(when he was a writer) as Vic Venom(?) & he would tell it like it is & address what was going on in wrestling even exposing Dok Hendrix as being Michael Hayes. It was a thrilling show.
I marked out when Paul Heyman called in long before WWE & ECW ended up working together. It totally looked like a shoot!and it seemed this was a shoot show.
All of a sudden the show began sucking the big one! There was a pay per view coming up with Sean Michaels defending against "Psycho" Sid.To me this was a"Who Cares?" PPV as Michaels had soundly beaten Sid on RAW before.
To my shock all the calls coming in were asking about the PPV & debating who would win between Sid & Sean & you could tell these "live call ins" were staged.
I was very disapointed in this broadcast & tuned in the following week hopping they'd go back to shoot talk on the wrestling world.Todd Pettengill comes on saying that on today's show they wouldn't have time to take calls & e-mails as they really wanted to focus on the events if that past Monday's RAW & regards to the up coming PPV & of course the entire hour was recycled garbage most RAW viewers all ready knew about. Then guess what?from then on that's all the show was!No more mention of being interactive it became another back up show rerunning the previous events of that week's RAW in one hour!"Live Wire" my Ass!I can't believe a few year's later when WWE came back to USA,they had a retrospective talking about "Live Wire" & how innovative it was that fans could participate but no mention how it went south & began sucking royally!
I actually got to speak to Vince Russo at the recent Fan Fest in San Francisco asking him about it.he agreed with me how great the show was initially but then they changed it.He told me the company got panicked because the show was starting to expose too much about the business so that's why they changed it in to a generic rehash!
