Boy what a time!No internet or dirt sheets or anything to find out what really was going on behind the scenes or when someone got fired or was leaving a promotion & signing to a new one. There was NO information back then.
When I first started watching wrestling in the 70's it was on local syndicated channels.Harley Race was the world champion, his name was always mentioned but I NEVER saw him or even knew anything about him or even what he looked like.
For some unexplained reason, what ever wrestling program I was watching would be taken off the air with out notice.usually when it was reaching a fever pitch in the feuds.
Then on another station a new wrestling program would be on with all new wrestlers which was hard to get used to.I'd wonder if Harley Race was still the champ & sure enough his name was still being mentioned yet who were all these new guys?
by 1982 I was watching a Spanish speaking wrestling program called "Lucha Libre".The "World" tag team champions were the masked brothers Brazo De Oro & Brazo De Plata.
One saturday afternoon after watching the Brazo brothers I came across the Phil Donahue show & the topic was pro wrestling & they had a whole gang if wrestlers in the studio including a guy named Hulk Hogan who I was familiar with.I recall 2 guys talking about how they hope to win the world tag titles from the champions who were sitting there.I believe they were Jerry Blackwell & Sheik Adnan Kaise.
So I'm all WTF??I thought the Brazo brothers were the tag champs what's going on here??That was my ignorance as a young wrestling fan not knowing about the many different promotions & territories that were around at the time. That was the AWA that was on Donahue.
It wasn't until a few years later when the WWF took off & cable TV entered the wrestling market that I finally figured this out.also reading wrestling magazines like PWI helped educate me.
So now NWA wrestling is on TBS & on local syndication.WWF was on USA as well as locally & the AWA was on ESPN.each with their own wrestlers & world champions.
So now my family took an interest in watching wrestling with me.They liked WWF & Hulk Hogan of course.WWF was my least favorite.
This is where I discovered the confusion & ignorance of the casual wrestling fan much like me when I was younger.I remember watching AWA & Nick Bockwinkle was introduced as the World champion & my mom who was watching said "I thought Hulk Hogan was the champ." so I had to enlighten her. Then she asked if Bockwinkle & Hogan will fight each other.I had an identical conversation about Rick Flair.
"Cowboy" Bob Orton & "Adorable" Adrian Adonis showed up on AWA as a tag team.I had a confused neighbor kid who was an avid WWF watcher that was wondering what this other wrestling program was that Adonis & Orton were suddenly appearing on it but no Hulk Hogan.I had to straighten him out.
on WWF "Super Stars" They'd promote house shows at the Cow Palace & make these cards sound better than any pay per view.there was only 2 or 3 PPV's a year at the time & house shows actually meant something.I knew all ready WWF was nation wide yet on our local channel they'd promote the next house show like no tomorrow. How ever, when I'd watch "WWF Prime Time Wrestling" on USA on Monday nights, the house show wouldn't be mentioned but they'd list dates for live events all around the country & it seemed there was a show every night in every major city.
That's how I figured out those interviews I 'd see on the locally syndicated Saturday morning show must have completely different interviews for these shows in the other cities & markets "Super Stars" aired in.So I was on to Vince Mcmahon's scheme!
There was this 12 year old neigbor kid that was really excited about a Cow Palace house show they were hyping with Jake "the Snake" Roberts headlining. We lived 2 hours from SF at the time.
This particular show was on a Thursday night. So this 12 year old kept asking me if it was going to be on TV.I had to explain to him it wasn't & the only way to see it, was to buy a ticket & go.I tried to explain how they make these house shows in each town sound like the event of the milleneum.Well come the night of this house show, the kid calls me up & asks me why he can't find it on TV ::)Some people never get it!
