An 'Idol' loses his record deal
NEW YORK (AP) -- Taylor Hicks might have won "American Idol," but he doesn't have his record deal anymore.
The soul singer, who claimed the "Idol" title in 2006, has apparently been dropped by J Records, a label within Sony-BMG, which signs the show's singers.
"Taylor is going to record on his own for the next album," said J Records publicist Liz Morentin, who did not give further details regarding Hicks.
Another "Idol" winner -- Ruben Studdard of season two -- left his contract with J Records late last year, but continues his contract with 19 Entertainment, the company managed by "Idol" creator Simon Fuller.
Studdard is now at work on an upcoming album, but it will not be distributed by J Records, Morentin said. Studdard's previous album, 2006's "The Return," has sold only 236,000 copies.
Roger Widynowski, spokesman for 19 Entertainment, did not immediately return phone and e-mail messages seeking comment on Hicks' situation.
Hicks' self-titled, post-"Idol" album, released in December 2006, debuted at No. 2 on the charts. In the weeks after it was issued, however, the disc slid down the charts.
While it sold a respectable 699,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan data, it did not reach the 1 million mark, unlike all the other debuts from previous "Idol" champs. It also did not register a hit song, unlike other "Idol" winners.

So, so far only two winners have gone on to be selling artists, one loser, and one winner is struggling to break through in R&B. And even then, the only who's stayed pop is fading.
I mean, the show gets great ratings. It's just a shame they can't ever seem to market any of them.

Funny, the only two Idol winners who truly became something (Clarkson, Underwood), are the only two who would have probably been discovered even if Idol never existed.
So how did this Taylor guy beat Daughtry out again?

Well they don't have the show to back them anymore. kinda like when the Monkees series was cancelled and sales plummeted. Still great records though.
Record labels are fading out. major artists don't need them and newer artists can't catch a break. If the industry turns on radio, they will be rightfully f***ed.

I think a lot of the problem with many of them is bad choice of singles, and that they fair to promote them as anything beyond Idol winners. With Carrie Underwood, I didn't even know she was on Idol until someone told me. Hell of a single, too, with her cheating song.

Gee, how could they have seen this coming? Winning a karaoke contest doesn't make you an artist. Combined with the quick turn around of Idol seasons, you're quickly forgotten. Even Clarkson, who is apparently an Idol success, has cancelled a tour because no one bought tickets.
The problem is, real talent always finds a way to suceed and the bullshit fades quickly.

There's always Jennifer Hudson...but didn't she technically lose on Idol?

Best I could tell, and I never watched show, but from what I hear, all this Taylor guy could go was sing Barry Manilow songs. And oddly enough, there isn't a big market out there for Barry Manilow cover bands. This should really just be more proof that reality shows are the devil Bobby Boucher.

The problem I think American Idol winners (and the show itself) have?
They suck.

She sung in Dreamgirls, if that counts Nah, not really. I'd heard the name before, never knew she was an Idol contestant.

I'm pretty sure she was on it at one point but didn't win. I know her better as an actress than as a singer, but I thought she had some sort of singing career.

She was on the same year as Fantasia but he got voted out early. It was considered a huge shocker at the time and even earned the ire of Elton John, who called the show "racist". I know way too much about this show.
