I agree that while musicians and non-musicians can enjoy the game in the same way the elderly can enjoy a nice round of Wii bowling or tennis, I would not consider them musicians nor athletes in the sport or art. Someone hit on it that we must not forget that they are simulators. Any thoughts as to whether this may lead to an industry changeover. The dance thing pretty much kept dance alive so far as I can tell. The ones that got good at the game , got pretty damn good at dancing so far as I can tell. Is the dance and the guitar game or the drum game equal? What about stripper Wii? Yeah, I think those games could bring about a change in the music industry in the same way a change in musical format (such as records to tapes, tapes to cds) brought about a change. not only is there a new way to discover great music (theres no telling how many bands i like now after hearing them for the first time on a guitar hero game)... but it could also bring about interest from younger people who originally had no intention to play a guitar or drums... hell, the next stevie ray vaughn or jimmi hendrix could easily be JUST NOW getting into playing the guitar strictly because guitar hero got him interested. so i'd say not only does a game like guitar hero promote album sales by introducing people to new music, but it also keeps guitar playing thriving as new people are becoming interested in playing guitar starting with the game.

To stay on topic: No, Guitar Hero doesn't make you a musician. It makes you a person playing a game that involves music.
Off-Topic: This does raise an interesting question. If a kid shoots up a school, it's because of GTA. If a kid picks up a guitar, is it because of Guitar Hero?

No offense to the Guitar Hero crowd, but no, playing with a video game controller shaped as a guitar doesn't mean they're any where close to being a musician.

I figure the closest thing Guitar Hero could be to a music instrument is keyboard. Just have to practice in both righty and lefty. If anything Guitar Hero is an excellent source for training finger dexterity.
Rock Band on the other hand teaches many beats on drums and develops rhythm.

Exactly. I'm not as into video games anymore, just because I don't have that kind of money to spend these days. I still enjoy them immensely, but without the financial investment... I have kinda drifted away. However, back in the day it was my main interest. Pretty much overtaking even wrestling. Well, about the time the Mortal Kombat and Doom controversies started... my dad got in several arguments with people about video games. His reasoning for not taking them away from me was basically that these days doctors are performing laser surgery, micro-surgery, and tons of other operations that require precise movements. Where did they get that dexterity from? In many cases... video games.

all too true... but again, nobody wants to believe that a kid that shoots up a school would do it no matter what videogame he played or what musician he listened to

As some one who owned GH 1 & 2 on PS2 and owns GH 2 & 3 and Rock Band on 360 I must say that..... no of course I'm not a musician. As far as the conversation on discovering music goes, for the most part I knew all the music from the games. However, I have discovered bands like Freezepop, Coheed & Cambria and a few others thanks to these games.

If people put as much time and effort into a real guitar as they do with Guitar Hero, then they probably could be musicians. But I'm sorry, people who are good Guitar Hero players are not musicians. Just people playing a video game.
It's like calling someone who's great at Madden or NBA Live an athlete.

If I spent as much time on a real guitar I would just suck at a real guitar and not be having fun. I know, I tried. My coordination is off(a broken finger from way back screwed that up, never was the same for some motions).

My wife used to play electric guitar. Her hand spread is awesome. She beats the hell out of me every time. None of my friends can beat her in battle mode.

No, playing Guitar Hero is just that: playing a game. If it inspires kids to pick up a real guitar, then all the better.
