For what people say about the MTV Movie Awards (and personally, it's dropped in quality since 2003), what they've recently done with their Best Actor/Supporting Actor awards has been cool.
Basically, instead of having Best Male and Best Female, they just have Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor and the five choices are both male and female.
I'm just curious about how you'd react if this was done with the Oscars. Imagine if, for example, this years Oscars consisted of, say, 3 men and 3 women instead of having 2 different categories?
I'm thinking about this because there has always been an issue on time in the Oscars. They've been more strict about how long people have with their speeches and with sketches and the like. Even though it might not be doable, if you fuse categories like Best Actor and Actress, then you might have more time to do other things on the show.
Just wondering what you guys think.

The problem is that the roles men and women portray are different, even if they're both dramatic. By combining them you run the risk of bias toward one or the other (although most likely men).
Plus, women's groups would not go with it. The first year that all men were nominated, they'd throw a huge fit.
There's better ways to cut into the time than by doing this.

I wouldn't like to see it happen. It would mean that half of the current nominees would get snubed in the acting catigories. Better to leave it like it is

SAGs will NEVER allow it. It's simple as that. Case closed ....because it means that less actors would have the prestige of "Oscar nominated" to their name?

Yeah. Keep it the way it is. Women and men play different roles.
