Lifetime Oscar winning director Sidney Lumet, who's been shooting movies for over 50 years from 12 ANGRY MEN to his recent BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD, apparently never got over that ROCKY beat out his masterpiece NETWORK. I don't blame him really. "There was no trace of an accent. It's embarrassing that Rocky beat us out. Chayefsky was so prescient. Everyone was saying we were going to take it all. And on the flight out to L.A., he said, 'Rocky's going to take Best Picture.' And I said, 'No, no, it's a dopey little movie.' And he said, 'It's just the sort of sentimental crap they love out there.' And he was right.'' " www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,2000...3551_7,00.html

Yeah, he had the better film, but Rocky never struck me as insipid.
Now had he won the first match, then yeah, I'd see the anger.

You'd think that being Sidney Lumet and responsible for so many good movies would help him feel better...

I think Rocky should have won. But even if Rocky never got made, I'd still pick Taxi Driver over Network.

The thing about Rocky the film, is that it mirrored the Rocky person so much. Nobody expected best picture to be Rocky, but WHAM IT GOES THE DISTANCE!
Come on, who doesn't love that?

Rocky was a best picture worthy film. The script is damn near perfect, the acting is real, the musical score is one of the finest ever. There is camera work in Rocky that seems commonplace now, but before 1976, nobody had ever seen it. It really is a masterpiece of film. But it had a happy ending, so the typical negative Hollywoodies are going to poo poo it. It just happens every once in a while. An uplifting and sentimental film hits the audience at just the right time. Rocky was it. They couldn't make All the Presidents Men every year. Hollywood always goes through the same cycle. Eventually people get sick of the negative pretentious crap. When a nice movie (especially one the caliber of Rocky) finally comes along, the public gets captivated.

Actually, if you go down the list of Best Picture winners, there's far more sentimental pictures that won than negative/cynical ones.

Howard Beale: [shouting] You've got to say, 'I'm a HUMAN BEING, Goddamnit! My life has VALUE!' So I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell, [shouting] 'I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!' Things have got to change. But first, you've gotta get mad!... You've got to say, 'I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!' Then we'll figure out what to do about the depression and the inflation and the oil crisis. But first get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell, and say it: [screaming at the top of his lungs] "I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!"

I love both films, but I wish Network would get noticed more today.

Rocky deserved it. Not that I'm biased because it's my favorite movie of all time, or anything!

Forgetting Rocky altogether, how would you guys feel if given the choice between Network and Taxi Driver? Rocky wasn't Network's only competition for the award.

Wow, am I the only one who watched NETWORK and thought it was just ridiculous insanity? The first 30-60 minutes (his initial breakdown and the corporation's initial reactions) were great but then it turned into a crazy and fairly uninteresting movie. I shook my head at the ending.

I'll go home and watch Dog Day Afternoon and love the guy all over again, but this is one arguement where he loses me.
