Hey gang...
I'm going to hit up the local Gamestop during my lunch break today and would like to get some advice on a good racing game for the PS2. Is there anything similiar to Mario Kart available? I'm not into those games where you need to race and race and race to get all the cool cars and add-ons, just a straight-forward type of racing game. Any suggestions?

Crash Team Racing, either for the original PS or the PS2 remake. Fun games.
Also, invest in Gran Turismo (any of them), Need for Speed games up until the year 2002, any NASCAR game up to 2003 is good too (especially the ones NOT with a EA SPORTS logo). You'll see why NASCAR is a sport when you start playing those games.

NFS Most Wanted and NFS Carbon are pretty fun.
Burnout 2 and 3 are both amazing.

Any of the Midnight Club titles (I recommend #3), and Burnout 3 and Revenge.

Try Crash Nitro Kart. I hear it's a lot like Mario Kart. I'd suggest Jak X, but I don't really know that much about that game. Also, you should try Wipeout Fusion.

I'll agree you can't go wrong with Gran Turismo. The Tokyo Xtreme Racer titles are fun as well (at least the Dreamcast ones, my friend who has a PS2 says the TXR ones are great for it too). Oh, and the Ford Racing games were a blast too.

Oh, and the Ford Racing games were a blast too. Holy crap someone who knows what TXR is. Yeah, Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero won't wow you in the graphics department, but it WAS the ORIGINAL "tune up your car and modify it for maximum performance" game, long before NFS Underground and it's derivatives were dreamed up. It's a great game. Easily my favorite racing game of all time. Tokyo Xtreme 3 is great too, better graphics and licensed cars (the cars in Zero are all real, but they are designated by the chassis codes rather than the actual name). Definitely a unique racing experience no other game delivers with it's fighting game style racing. Well I guess technically Shutokou Battle (Tokyo Xtreme Racer on Dreamcast) is the one that gets the title of being the OG, but yeah. I own all of them except TXR 2 for Dreamcast just because I can't find it. I don't recommend the TXR Drift series though.

I was going to mention the greatness that is Gran Turismo 4, but since it's flat out racing you're after, I'd suggest NFS and/or Midnight Club.
