I know a few of these so I'll get things rolling
The Ramones-named after the sudanim Paul Mcartney used to sign into hotels "Paul Ramone"
The Rolling Stones-named after a Muddy Waters song
Alice Cooper-Alice wanted a Lizzy Borden style sounding name, the band started rumors that their name was chosen by a Ouija board
The Smiths-name chosen as according to Johnny Marr "The Rolling Stones was already taken"
Guns N Roses- named I believe after leadsinger Axl Rose and original guitarist Tracii Gunns (I think)
Black Sabbath-name taken from a horror movie poster
Bob Dylan-Original first name, second name a tribute to Dylan Thomas
Duran Duran-named after top scientist in awful softcore flick Barberella
The Teardrop Explodes-named after phrase discovered in a Doctor Strange comic
The Sex Pistols- name chosen by Malcolm Mclaren as he watned his band to sound like "sexy young assasins"

As many of these guys have cool stories, I can't help but wonder how many of our favorite bands were named simply because they got drunk and someone said something odd that just stuck. Especially now that every concievable non-contrived band name has been used up. I'd imagine starting a band today is a lot like trying to clear a screen name on a website. "What do you mean SephirothFanboy007 is already taken?"

Beastie Boys - Supposedly BEASTIE stands for Boys Entering Anarchistic Stages Towards Internal Excellence.
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Named after band member's annoying gym teacher Leonard Skinner.
Megadeth - A megadeath is a military term for a million dead.
Sepultura - Portugeuse word for tomb.
Deep Purple - Richie Blackmore's grandmother liked the Bing Crosby song by the same name.
Black Sabbath - After a poster for a horror movie.

I believe Metallica got theres because a friend of Lars was starting a heavy metal magazine and asked Lars which idea he should use for the name of the magazine, one of the ideas was Metallica so Lars told him to use 1 of the other ideas and kept Metallica for himself.

Pink Floyd: named after two blues musicians. Grand Funk Railroad: pun based on the Grand Trunk Western Railroad Whitesnake: Coverdale's obsession with sex has no limits Burzum: Tolkien's orkish word for "darkness" [plural word actually] Led Zeppelin: allegedly a member of the band said "that will sink faster than a lead zeppelin" (referred to a song or to the musical direction IIRC). They opted for the "led" spelling not to confuse American audiences. Motorhead: Lemmy loves drugs. Surprised?

AC/DC saw the letters on the technical part of the instruction manual for a vaccuum cleaner. Rock on I had always heard sewing machine, but either way, still awesome! That's what I heard as well. I believe Metallica got theres because a friend of Lars was starting a heavy metal magazine and asked Lars which idea he should use for the name of the magazine, one of the ideas was Metallica so Lars told him to use 1 of the other ideas and kept Metallica for himself. I heard they just blatantly stole the name. and from what I heard the people who was starting up the magazine was not very pleased.

Deep Blue Something - the drummer suggested they name the band "Deep Blue...something", thinking his bandmates would add a third word. Thye just kept the something. Gin Blossoms - take from a photo of comedy actor/writer and legendary drunk W.C. Fields that was captioned "W.C. Fields with gin blossoms", referring to his bumpy nose, made that way by his all-day-long gin drinking habit.

The Doors got their name from the title of a book: The Doors of Perception which itself had been borrowed from a poem.

Incubus - Was as simple as finding a word in the dictionary that sounded sweet.
Coheed & Cambria - All of the bands' albums are an overarching story between a man and a woman, Coheed & Cambria...

Kiss was an accident. The four members were driving in a car and wanted a four letter band name and Gene really wanted smurf but of course, how are you gonna sell that. And then Peter Criss just said "how about KISS" and the rest is history and it would also mark the first and last thing Peter Criss ever contributed to the band that meant something. (yeah yeah Beth. That song sucks)
Verruca Salt from the Willy Wonka movie.

Bay City Rollers: They wanted Rollers but the management wanted a catchy sounding town. Bay City was just random. It could have been Muskegon if they moved their finger.
Why I know this, I have no idea.

Led Zeppelin: allegedly a member of the band said "that will sink faster than a lead zeppelin" (referred to a song or to the musical direction IIRC). They opted for the "led" spelling not to confuse American audiences. It was actually Keith Moon who named them. They had asked him to be the drummer and he asked who was in the band, he said "No, that band is gonna take off like a lead zeppelin".

I do believe Motley Crue got its name from someone stumbling in on one of their late-night/early-morning parties, taking a look around at the human debris there and going "Man, what a motley looking crew this is." At least that was THEIR story about it.
And the umlauts over the o and u came from Vince Neil's love of Lowenbrau.

Aerosmith took their name from Joey Kramer going thru a period of writing down the word Aero and then following it with another word. Aerosmith is one he just recalled. At first, they didn't want to name themselves Aerosmith because Arrowsmith was the name of a book they all had to read in highschool. Once Kramer explained it was Aero, not Arrow, smith...they took the name.

Oasis: Named after the Oasis Leisure Centre in Swindon, where Noel Gallagher was a roadie for a band who performed there.
