Pearl Jam was my favorite band growing up but after learning the guitar(I am still a beginner btw), I lost amount of interest in them since there songs are not as complex as many bands out there. While I still think Ten was a great album, I like it due to its songwriting despite the fact that the guitar playing isn't dynamic and the lead singer is limited.
That being said, does musicianship factor in your like/dislike in music?

No. I prefer music with emotion. Something that makes you feel. Happy or sad. Not some bland twiddly guitar crap. 2 notes can bring out more feeling and emotion if done right than anything Steve Vai ever did.

No. I listen to music based on whether or not I like a song/piece.

I listen to music if it kicks ass. Anything else is just emo.

You be the judge. ;D

Absolutely.
Edit: Now that I think of it, not all the time. It is one of the things I usually look for first though.

I changed the topic title a bit because I felt the original topic message might be misleading despite those who posted here answered it correctly.

It definitely doesn't hurt, but at heart.... I'm definitely a caveman metal type guy. Where I'll take simple metal stomps like the breakdown at the end of Pantera's "Domination" over technical solos and changing time signatures.

I respect and enjoy good musicians..and feel they can add to a good song..but..
A. good musicianship doesnt make a good song and
B a song can be good without a player being a virtuoso.

I really like to listen to music and dissect it. I want to listen to it and try to figure out what instruments are on which channel.

I have a good ear for the cowbell. Although most pieces need more of it.

Actually, sometimes simplicity can be the sign of true artistic genius.

Actually, sometimes simplicity can be the sign of true artistic genius. Could this apply to wrestling? Hogan was simplistic as anyone can get, but he has legions of fans.

He knew what he had to do to get attention and did it. He got more fans with one leg drop than all the flippy moves have gotten combined.

Well not necessarily, I like some punk and some of those guys can be outplayed by 12 year olds. At heart I am a metalhead and there are some virtuoso players (any instrument) I find tedious and pretentious along with some who are great.

If I hear something different that makes me go....wow, or if i just hear a great song than thats what I look for. Yeah I love my guitar solos whether it's Queen, Maiden, Metallica, Rage, Muse whoever, but all those bands have great emotion in their music anyways.

Nah, I just like stuff that I like the sound of. I like some skilled stuff like Primus, and some stuff like AxCx who are terrible musicians and stuff like N.W.A where they don't play instruments.

I appreciate musicianship, the way you're defining it. But it's not a necessity for me to like any band/performer/whatev. A simple little ditty can strike me just the same as a complex song with time signature shifts. I have weird tastes, though.

Yes and no. Something can either be real involved and technical or stupid and catchy. Music should make you happy. You shouldn't be one of those elitist musical depth kids and you shouldn't listen to every dumb song that comes on the radio either. Unless it makes you happy. However you should never let your views on music interfere with someone's ability to enjoy theirs. But be respectful. Don't blare your tunes at stoplights just to do it. That's gay.
