LONDON - Organizers of one of Britain's best-known music festivals on Tuesday defended their decision to book Jay-Z as their headline act after Oasis songwriter Noel Gallagher blamed the U.S. rapper for disappointing ticket sales.
The outdoor Glastonbury festival is a cornerstone of Britain's music calendar. But this year's festival has yet to sell out, in contrast to past years when tickets were snapped up within hours.
Gallagher, whose band headlined the festival in 1995 and 2004, said rap was to blame.
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it," Gallagher said in an interview, an audio of which was posted to the British Broadcasting Corp.'s Web site Monday. "If you break it, people ain't gonna go. I'm sorry, but Jay-Z? ... No chance." He explained that the inclusion of a hip-hop act went against the festival's tradition of guitar music, adding: "I'm not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. No way. No. It's wrong."
Glastonbury Festival co-organizer Emily Eavis said the 38-year-old festival had a long history of attracting rap acts, including Cypress Hill and The Roots. She said the media stir over Gallagher's comments revealed an "innate conservatism" in some sectors of British society.
"There is also an interesting undercurrent in the suggestion that a black, U.S. hip-hop artist shouldn't be playing in front of what many perceive to be a white, middle-class audience. I'm not sure what to call it, at least not in public, but this is something that causes me some disquiet," she said in an article published Tuesday in The Independent newspaper.
Eavis said she thought Jay-Z was "absolutely the right act" for the festival.
---
Now, I'm not familiar with the traditions of this music festival, but I see nothing wrong with expanding musical borders.

"JAY-Z IS A NIPPLE!"
Go away Oasis. No one cares what you have to say. Just play "Wonderwall" and shut up.

Go beat up Liam some more, Noel.
That's the only good thing those brothers did.

Though I appreciate their talent, I've never been a big Oasis fan. However, I've always appreciated how candid both Gallagher brothers have always been in interviews and whatnot, whether or not I agree with what they say.

He's right. It's not so much that it's hip hop though as it is Jay Z sucks. If it was Public Enemy back in the day it'd be cool.

I agree with Gallagher there, and I still love the band Oasis. Sure, they have lost relevance, and their latest stuff can never compare to their first two records, BUT.... they are the soundtrack to my youth - and so, I will love them forever.

Jay Z just doesn't have the appeal over here that he does in the States, I'm guessing. One year, Kylie Minogue was supposed to headline (YEAH! RAWK! ) & was replaced by Coldplay , so it's not about acts being crap; simply popularity.

I hate to say it... I agree with him.
The Roots and Cypress Hill are bad examples because they use a lot of live instruments and stuff, but rap doesn't generally lead to a thrilling live show. It's a bit harder to get stoned and watch the colours your hands trail behind you while listening to '99 Problems.' By all means have Jay-Z at the festival, but headlining? I don't think so.
However, Noel will have no credibility here since four years ago his band gave a shockingly bad set. They're much better now.

I can only hope one day Suggs gets the green light for his idea of a music festival. That way I'm not stuck chosing between the crap we currently have

I'm not a big Oasis fan but i actually think they're kind of right here. Jay-Z isn't the best headliner but to be honest the other headliners (Kings Of Leon and The Verve) aren't really the best choices either.

Suggs was saying that he and the rest of Madness would love to hold a music festival in Scotland (possibly Aberdeen) that focused PURELY on music with young unsigned talent getting to showcase themselves without selling out for reality tv shows and the audience paying to hear good music rather than one or two bands they like with the possibility that they're miming to a pre-taped performace

KoL I agree, like the Killers a while back, are a bad choice, becuase they weren't well established. But the Verve were like, close to Oasis-level massive in their heyday and are in the middle of a big comeback here, so I'd say they could definitely pull it off it they headline it. Haven't they headlined it before?

smurf them, seriously. Whats so wrong with rap Well, since you asked, there's a LOT wrong with rap. ;D But on that note, Oasis AND Jay-Z both suck if you ask me. Can Jay-Z please retire again and stay that way this time?

This isn't about what's wrong with rap, this would be like Slipknot or Slayer headlining the Up In Smoke tour. It just doesn't make sense.

Yeah it'll be great to hear all the old classics but for me the comeback has kind of been a bit flat.
