Yes! I love rent aswell! I'm the only person I know that liked the movie. I'm finally going to see it live on 3-18. Hienz Winkler and someone from american Idol are in the leads.

Great production. Saw it 3 times...once on Broadway & twice on the traveling show. I love the whole atmosphere of the show. Very exciting & great to get into. I do enjoy the soundtrack. Plus I laugh my ass off when my wife cries during it.

Assassins? A musical about assassins? ...Out unless the guys are like Altair in Assassin's Creed and the gals are like the gals in Noir. ;D Yes, a musical about all the former Presidential Assassins. It goes through it from their eyes, so you sympathize with the assassins. Great show

I saw rent on 3-18. I sat in the front row for $23. I knew they had cheap seats on broadway, but I had no clue they did that on tour. I called 90 minutes before the show started and they said the cheapest seats were $43. I was surprised when they asked me for $23.
Sitting with the rent heads was awesome! they were so jazzed it made the show that much more fun.

I didn't like the film, but if I had tickets to the show, I'd be willing to give it another chance.

I`m a big fan of Rent. I have the film on tape, although the amount of time its been watched over the years the static on the VHS is bad.

Idina Menzel, as great as she was in the film, I much preferred her performance in "Wicked" when I went to see that.
As for RENT, I enjoy it, but as an actor, I get annoyed when everyone sings "One Song Glory" for that musical audition or "Seasons of Love" when everyone just "feels like singing". In other words, it's a good show that's marred by the fact that every teenage actor studies the book of Larson.

I love the show, but I do think it has gotten this weird cult-like following and excuses obvious flaws in the show that, admittedly, exist at no one's fault. Plus, like any popular show, young actors who barely know the business think they're so original and cool by using it when it only shows how uninformed they are.
And milkman, a theater prof. i had in college doesn't like Rent for the same reason. He feels the story is too absurd to take seriously.
I understand the criticisms, but at the same time I think its flaws also make it work.

Thought the story was a little too implausible, myself. I saw the musical in the 90s, and the movie a year or so ago, and I remember thinking "okay, so all these guys got AIDS in different ways, and they all just happen to run into each other in New York City? Riiiiiiight." The movie flows better, of course, because of editing, but it comes off as more pretentious. Plus the part of the movie where the redheaded buzzkill machine is running around all pissed that he has a job doing something similar to his art just makes me want to throw something at the TV. That's how starving artists become not starving artists, asshole!

Well to your first point, at the time when the show is set (early 90's) and the location, it isn't implausible that AIDS would have been more widespread. Remember, they aren't associating with the middle or upper class. These guys are poor, living around drug addicts and street walkers. Besides, with almost every musical you have to suspend belief a little. Plus, the show is based on Larson's life and what he saw around him. As for the second, that's a common complaint about the show. You certainly aren't wrong, but the counter argument is he is a true artist and doesn't want anyone telling him what to do.

Holy crap, this thread revived?
Anyway, I ended up seeing the show last month and it was absolutely brilliant. I was seriously in tears just during the opening for the simple fact that it's been my dream to see it for 5 years or so now...still my favourite musical, and just as life-changing for me as it was when I first discovered it. Everything about seeing it live was just one of the best experiences I've ever had.
I love RENT way too much.

Though I basically agree with cenanuff's criticisms, I'll add that even if the show isn't your cup of tea, it's entertaining and probably worth going. If someone offers you a ticket or something, I wouldn't turn it down.

...and now I really need to see the stage version. Yeah...you do. If you like musicals and you can relate to it in any way, it's one of the most awesome and fun experiences ever. OK if you have seen my MYSPACE page i am ALL RENT! I love it with a passion! I finally saw the touring production couple weeks ago and i have to say..it was an experience i will not forget! I have listened to the original cast recording for 10 years now and I loved the movie and i ALWAYS wanted to see it in NYC but can't get there so for it to come here was A HUGE DEAL FOR ME!! I understand where Tony is coming from because i have been a RENT head for a LONGGGG time now and i have to say there is NOTHING bad about that! Jonathan Larson will forever be a genius in my book and its sad he died the night before it was going to screen to audiences but uplifting they did it anyway...I can recite all the lyrics and if there wa strivia about RENT i would know it..i read all the books and saw the play and the movie and got both recordings and ..man I am blabbing on...i LOVE RENT!!
