I did enjoy the production version that I saw a few years ago and enjoyed the movie as well. I used to play a broadway revue show back in my cruise ship days that had a RENT medley in it. When you can play a couple of songs two times a night, two days every week for about 6 months and NOT get sick of them, there has to be something worthwhile about those songs.

Thought the story was a little too implausible, myself. I saw the musical in the 90s, and the movie a year or so ago, and I remember thinking "okay, so all these guys got AIDS in different ways, and they all just happen to run into each other in New York City? Riiiiiiight." The movie flows better, of course, because of editing, but it comes off as more pretentious. Plus the part of the movie where the redheaded buzzkill machine is running around all pissed that he has a job doing something similar to his art just makes me want to throw something at the TV. That's how starving artists become not starving artists, asshole! Well to your first point, at the time when the show is set (early 90's) and the location, it isn't implausible that AIDS would have been more widespread. Remember, they aren't associating with the middle or upper class. These guys are poor, living around drug addicts and street walkers. Besides, with almost every musical you have to suspend belief a little. Plus, the show is based on Larson's life and what he saw around him. But they somehow all managed to get AIDS in different ways. IIRC from the musical, rocker boy got it from unprotected hetero sex, stripper chick got it from sharing needles, black professor guy got it from a transfusion, drag queen got it from homosexual sex, and I forget how video artist chick got it, or whether lawyer girlfriend had it. Point is, I can't suspend disbelief for an obvious political statement. And it was set in the late 80s.

You're almost right, except Maureen(video artist chick) didn't have it...Collins(NYU teacher/Angel's boyfriend) did. And no, Joanne didn't have it either.

I can't stand RENT. A teacher in high school forced us to listen to the cast recording on multiple occasions. What a bunch of mopey, self-obsessed crap.
The other thing is that it has not aged well at all. You can smell the 90s all over that thing and the smell ain't good.

I HATE most musicals, but Rent was quite the exception. I loved the movie so much I bought the DVD. Haven't had a chance to see the stage show though.

You definitely need to check out the stage show if it ever comes around you. I know there's gonna be another tour next year with the original Mark and Roger taking part. I can't wait.
