Last night, my wife discovered that all of her Microsoft Word files that were saved on the desktop were gone. Well, I did a seach, went into her "Documents and Settings" folder and retrieved them. I put them all back in a folder on her desktop, and stupidly left it at that. I know, I know, I should have backed it up on a flash drive. I'm a big moron. I get it.
However, tonight we find they're gone. I did a search, they're not in her "Documents and Settings" folder, they're not anywhere. My word files on my account are all there, but hers have dissapeared. Is there any way they can be retrieved? I'm not much of a computer guy, so jargon-free answers would be much appreciated. She's freaking out. She had her resume on there as well of a lot of Documents for school.

If it was on the desktop, it sounds like it was accidentally deleted.
Word makes automatic back ups of files, if you allow it to.
Do a Search for *.doc in the computer Search Function.
If using XP
START SEARCH All Files and Folders *.doc
That will bring up every .doc file on your hard drive.
Good luck.

No. A system restore won't get you that soft data. Check your recycle bin. Otherwise, sounds like it just got deleted. Doesn't sound like a virus or anything, as your other documents would have been deleted as well.

Please forgive me if this is the dumbest question in the history of the internet, but could it be possible I was hacked and someone just deleted it for shits and giggles? I find it unlikely, but who knows?

I don't know that program personally, but there are programs that can get previously deleted material off of your hard drive, without a problem.

Far be it from me to point fingers, however, are you sure your wife didn't just delete her files? I don't see how it can affect specifcally her files, not yours. Or if something else was missing, then maybe I could see a problem, but specific missing files seems like....I dunno, off.
