To be fair though, I don't think any of the guys in this thread (well except that banned moron) would go to an autistic or mentally handicapped kid and call them a retard. My gf's son is autistic and we never really get anyone going out of their way to say that. I mean, I get the idea of the thread, but the only real people calling mentally challenged people retards are pretty much the definition of the word idiot. The definition of the word "idiot" dates back to early psychology when the mentally defecent or what people refer to as "retards" where deemed "Moron" "Idiot" or "Imbecile" So the definition of idiot is actually "mentally retarded" Its the evolution of the word like states earlier. You won't find anybody calling someone with a mental handicap a "moron" these days (hopefully) and Im sure years from now "retard" won't even be thought of dealing with people with mental handicaps. Sorry, needed to put my parents college Psych degree money to work for once.

I always thought it was spelled squaw. Hehe. Thats how much I care about the word. I don't even care enough to spell it right. I'm also surprised no ones mentioned the saying about arguments on the internet. Well Slim banned that one guy before he could. ;D

JUST LIKE in the two examples I provided.

Offensive when Americans say it. I'm not American. it says right in the quote it cheifly used by french canadians. Did you even read what I said? With your logic, if it's hurtful, the context that it is used in doesn't matter. You even said it yourself! Context means nothing when it's a hurtfull slur.

I also think a lot of people are playing a persona online as well as a temporary escape from the real world. Not everyone of course, but for a lot of people sure.

I once again point out chris rock and micheal richards. one is a millionaire for saying n****r and the other was threatened for using it.

Now how would you feel if I let the cat out of the bag and told you I was special needs and have been called retarded on here? would it change anything? probably not.

A lot of good points from both sides, and I'm glad this hasn't turned into a flamefest.
I really think there's no real black and white to this issue though, just shades of gray.

Except it's only hurtful to Canadians when used by an American. I'm Canadian. You said no matter what context it is used in, the word is offensive. You then say that even though kanuck can be offensive, that since you're using it in a different context, it's fine and dandy. You have backed yourself into a corner.

Did the other person know though? I like you, but I don't know you, just what I see on this forum. I don't get easily offended (not saying you do), so if someone calls me a retard, I don't care. Now if they called my stepson one, I'll beat the shit out of them.

I mean there have been a few flame posts but the mature people just ignored them and kept going. I honestly want to thank people for not tearing me apart because of my views.

Also, if Canuck is a negative word, then why is a pro hockey team named that? Am I not allowed to say the name merely because I'm American? I get both points, honestly I do, but when it comes down to it it's just an argument of semantics. I kind of compare it to my grandmother, from time to time she still uses racially unacceptable terms, but it's only because that was the normal term of her day. I think with words like gay and retarded, we have just grown up saying it. (not saying it's right or wrong) But long story short, habits are hard to change, and whether you make good points or not, some people will use it and some won't
