What exactly is the appeal of the ocean beach these days? Sand, sharks, and saltwater. Thats all you get. Go to a wavepool or something...

What's the appeal?
Great fishing, fresh air, breezes on a warm day, nature, the beauty of the Earth, amazing sunrises/sunsets, looking out for miles over the horizon, boating, the sound of waves crashing against the shore, being "where the world ends", the awesomeness behind something that can hold so much beauty and so much destruction and power.
Being at the ocean just relaxes me, it puts me in a better state of mind and much of my troubles and daily stresses just melt away. The less crowded of a beach the better.

Beach: Great place to kick back, great food and nightspots near by.
Ocean: I'm with you, smells, polluted, jellyfish ect.. I'm more of a mountain guy anyway.

Wavepool's don't have this. Both of these are from the Outer Banks. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse: Ocracoke Lighthouse from across Silver Lake:

Hold on to the thread The currents will shift Glide me towards... You know somethings left And were all allowed To dream of the next oh, ohh the next, Time we touch...
You dont have to stray Tho oceans away Waves roll in my thoughts Hold tight the ring... The sea will rise... Please stand by the shore... Oh, oh, oh, I will be... I will be there once more...

I'd rather go to the mountains myself.

Don't be messin' with Billy! Get out of my dreams! And into my car! Honestly, that's kind of a freaky and threatening thing to sing-shout at someone. Truly though, the beach can be very righteous when it's sparsely populated, like Deadpool said. You can find some amazing things washed up on beaches, too (you know, besides used condoms and needles at really scummy beaches). Beaches in wintertime never have people one them, but are strikingly beautiful. Lastly, it takes some luck and perfect timing, but if you are showing up to the beach in a car just as an unexpected downpour occurs, people in skimpy bathing suits hustle to gather their things and scatter like jiggly, fleshy ants. That's comedy.
