Man for real why cant anyone put out a music video these days that isnt just a band singing on a stage in some random location?
The only thing thats worse is one of a band singing on a regular soundstage, where they dont even try to put it anywhere.
Its gotta be the most unoriginal video idea, next to rap videos where they're in a club or something...

IMO, music videos have been pretty much a dead art form since way back - like, 1995 or so. Really, what can you do with them that hasn't been done already?

Meh. You can't really blame anyone for not making the next great video, because they ALL have sucked since:

Why spend money on something that will only be played once a week on MTV or seen by hundreds on FUSE?
Besides, Pearl Jam showed us you don't need videos to be successful.

Hip hop: bling bling and expensive car.
Metal: some dark location/forest
Most music videos rely heavily on clichès, and that's the key of their "success"

Doesn't help that Michel Gondry, Chris Cunningham, and Spike Jonze have mostly moved on to films.

The last original music video I can think of is Smack My Bitch Up by Prodigy. Protege Moi by Placebo might count as well, but it's original in the sense that it's just porn

It also came out about three years before Thriller.

Metal bands really don't worry about the video portion... as it merely serves as a way to remind people they have a new album out.
Why waste the money to make it all flashy? Especially when there's very little chance it'll be shown outside of the band's own website or public access video shows.

In the 80's it was Michael Jackson and the Talking Heads, in the 90's it was Björk, Beck and the ocassional odd one. Otherwise I haven't cared for most music videos in a long time.
