I recently got the new Indiana Jones boxset, and while watching the films I started thinking about how the movies would have turned out if Tom Selleck had played the role since he was the original actor cast as Indy.
Personally I think he would have been a decent Indiana Jones, but what made Harrison Ford so perfect was the way he was able to make Indy's fear and physical pain jump right at the viewer. To me the best example of this is in Temple of Doom when Indy is fighting that big dude on the conveyor belt and the Maharajah is sticking the voodoo doll of Dr. Jones. I cant see Tom Selleck selling pain and fear the way Harrison Ford did, I just cant.
This was just something I happened to be thinking about so I thought I would post it here and see what the rest of you thought.

The corollary of this...
What if Harrison Ford would've played Magnum, P.I. and Mr. Baseball?

Is it that Harrison Ford was able to sell the pain and fear better than Tom Selleck or that we think he could because it's what we saw? Personally I think Selleck would have done just fine as Indy. Personally I think a more interesting question is Had he played Indy would Tom Sellek's career fallow the same path as Fords? ie Would he be cast in more dramatic films like Witness.

I'm pretty sure Tom was originally cast because Speilberg was wanting to create his own James Bond, and Tom Selleck had the coolness of a James Bond type for sure.

He could have been a good Flintheart Glomgold though. I really hope some of you get that reference.

Are you sure you're not actually named after a Toyota Celica instead?

I think Tom would have done a really good job as Indie. I can't say if he'd be as good as Harrison or not, but I'm sure he'd do his best.
BTW, it was actually George Lucas who wanted to use Selleck, and Speilburg who wanted Ford. Lucas didn't want to keep using the same actor over and over and over again in all his movies (Ford had already been in American Graffiti and Star Wars) but Speilburg thought Harrison would be perfect for Indiana (and ultimately he was probably right).
A part of me would have LOVED to see Vader with that Welsh accent! There aren't enough cool villains with that sort of voice in the world!

Do any of the audio tracks of David Prowse exist? Other than what we heard on Empire of Dreams the only place they probably exist is under George Lucas' bed...next to a certain sledgehammer he has for destroying certain tapes...once he has the time anyway.
