9/11 would have never happened, war in the Middle East would end and gas would be $1.25 a gallon. Someone, cue up Mick Foley JPG, giving the thumbs up!

Wrestling would probably have a better reputation.

Wrestling would probably have a better reputation. More like a small, short lived media uproar that some politician didn't get it and someone looking at any relationship between wrestling and violence in children, or wrestling and drugs in children or Matt and Jeff Hardy: wrestling children.

It would be just another reminder as to just how big wrestling was back then.

It wouldn't have happened. Foley's nomination was a joke that went further than most people expected. If he had a real chance of winning, Time would have simply pulled his name from the running.
There is absolutely NO way a respected magazine like Time was going to let "some 'rasslin guy" win their award.

Wrestling would probably have a better reputation. Considering 1998 was before wrestlers started falling from ceilings, dropping dead at an early age by the truckload, and commiting unspeakable acts of atrocity, I highly doubt that would end up being the case.

If Foley would win, people would go "that's odd" and move on with their lives.

If he had a real chance of winning, Time would have simply pulled his name from the running. I believe they did. He was winning (or in the top 3 of) the online vote when they pulled him from the poll.

If Time is foolish enough to open its poll to the general public and invite votes for literally anyone in the world, my feeling is they should be prepared to hold up the result, even if it's someone totally ridiculous. Hey, you asked, right? This is who the public selected. It's not as if real people didn't cast real votes.
Otherwise, what's the point? If you can remove a wrestler from the voting by shrugging it off as a big prank, what's to stop you from removing a mass murderer, or a divisive political figure, or a cheesy teen idol with a vocal fanbase? You can find a reason to disqualify anyone.
Didn't they nix Osama Bin Laden as Man of the Year one year, because they knew it wouldn't sit well with some people?

Bin Laden was in the running in 2001. They went with Rudy Giuliani.

Wasn't Ric Flair leading the TIME Man of the Century counting in '99 before they removed him?
