It's come to my attention lately that in ROH whenever someone is being punched, the ref is yelling at the guy throwing the punches to open his hands up. It just seemed weird to me because closed fists are not illegal, and it wasn't a Pure Title Rules match. Can anyone explain this to me?

technically, in the "wrestling rule book", closed fists are illegal. In pure title matches, they just cost you one of your 3 rope breaks. Then after that, its immediate DQ.
But like most old school rules, most companies don't even follow the rules anymore. Back in the days(60's and 70's), it wouldn't be uncommon for a match to end via DQ because of repeated use of closed fists.

Yeah, closed fists in pro wrestling are illegal. You'll notice, however, that in recent times, the WWE refs don't warn about closed fists like they used to. You see it on indies a lot, but not in WWE any longer.

The problem is that closed-fisted punches expose the business. In kayfabe, open-fisted punches don't cause as much injury, hence someone can take dozens in a match without looking like a boxer after 10 rounds. If you have everyone using closed-fisted punches, it starts getting ridiculous when no one's all bruised and swollen.

Funny... I'd not noticed this before... but last night I was at an IPW:UK show, and Bryce Remsberg was brought in to ref some of the matches... he was asking for closed fists to be opened.

I've always hated this as well, how does a punch from somebody like the big show do no damage but a an overdrive or leg/elbow drop is a finisher? As a kid I didn't like Piper as I thought it was unfair he had a boxing background.
