Which veteran of the squared ring am I talking about? Some who clicked this might of thought the Undertaker, Ric Flair maybe HBK, or possibly Hardcore Holly. But no I refer to the Tough Guy ... Hacksaw Jim Duggan Now some of you might be wondering what I'm getting at here and the thing is this guy is always over. Not hugely over, but enough to get the fans reaction and it's all down to a simple chant and a 2x4 ... plus add in some usa chants depending on the opponent. This simple yet effective style could and should be passed onto the next generation. Sure his in ring style is pure brawling but hey it's worked with another older veteran, Finlay (I love to fight and his Shileaghly spelling probably wrong there) So someone backstage should give these guys some props and send them out. DH Smith is good enough in the ring but he has nothing to make him stand out ... but if he was given a metal pole and catchphrase invovling bashing people's noggin in then I reckon he'd be over by the end of the month. So let's appreciate the pioneer of chant and prop weapon gimmicks that gets people over ... Hacksaw Jim Duggan!!

He's also really animated in the ring.
The problem with A LOT of guys not just WWE guys, but guys in the x-division, the indies, and ROH is they just look so ROBOTIC

Duggan was never a ring wizard, but I've always had a soft spot for him.
I like that his gimmick has always been simple:He's a patriot. He's a big goof who goes out and brawls.
The guy can sell. I think he's always been underrated in that aspect
I like that he ENJOYS being out there. Always has. Always loves putting on a show for the fans.
People will never remember Duggan as a mega star, but Ill always have fond memories of him. I wish there were more Jim Duggans in the wrestling business

Duggan also has nostalgia on his side. It's easier to get the crowds behind you when they consist of 20- and 30-year-old dudes who remember him from WWF Superstars.

Something else about Hacksaw that works: He's LOUD. Loud = over. damn right. I've often pointed out that a lot of the magic disappeared when we lost the screaming wrestlers. Warrior Sid Vader Hogan Steiner the list goes on.

Warrior Sid Vader Hogan Steiner the list goes on. I agree. If you have any trouble talking (obviously Hogan didn't), just scream. It won't hurt. On the other hand, I absolutely LOVE Bockwinkel's promos on AWA. He seemingly never raises his voice above a casual tone and just seems to be happy calmly talking about his opponents and explaining things. And another thing about guys like Duggan... they're not afraid to show a little ass. In these days, fans aren't going to automatically cheer you because you're handsome or a second/third/seventy-fifth generation wrestler. However, some of the old time guys understood that as well. Guys got over by showing weaknesses. The crowd didn't really need to pity them, but they needed to relate to some degree. That's why there is/has been backlash on guys like HHH/Cena.

Even back then he was always over, but then who wasnt over in the 80s? Even total jobbers like Koko B Ware were mad over compared to todays crowds.

Maybe it's just nostalgia, but damned if I don't have a smile on my face every time I see Hacksaw come out to the ring with Old Glory. I seem to remember at some point in time he gave his 2 x 4 a name, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was.

None of my friends have any respect for Duggan and give me a lot of s*** for liking him, so I'm glad to see that some of you guys here share my admiration for Ol' Hacksaw

AIN'T NO STOPPING ME NOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW . . . he's not over he just screams one line. I'm talking guys who just yell everything. Even when they're trying to sound calm, they still sound piss. Kennedy had it going on his first year on Smackdown.

Duggan has always been over because most American fans would have cheered for a brickwall with the US flag sprayed over it. Jokes aside, Hacksaw clicked with the crowd. Maybe it was the flag, or the 2x4, or the silly HOOOOOOOO/USA USA chant, or the fact he never looked ripped... A bit of the "common man" vibe that made Dusty Rhodes big. All those new guys are 100x better than good ol' Hacksaw, but they all lack the charisma and the 2-cents psychology to make and keep the crowd interested. Duggan involved the fans in his matches, many many others don't. Probably there's no real explaination to that.
