Due to the recent popularity of Mixed Martial Arts, and the continuing popularity of Professional Wrestling, an idea has come to me. In a way, it's a bit of a hybrid of the two. At it's core, it's wrestling, but in practice, it will be alot like MMA. What am I talking about? Professional Shoot Wrestling!
Here's the idea. You take the rules of Professional Wrestling, and engage in a legitimate athletic competition using those rules. The action takes place in a ring with 3 ropes, and the competitors can use various holds and strikes to weaken their opponent, with the eventual goal of pinning them or forcing them to submit. The action would closely resemble an MMA fight, but it would be a wrestling match.
The rules of Professional Wrestling actually do a great deal to ensure the safety of the competitiors, and where thye don't, they could be tweaked a bit. Striking would be limited, but legal. You could use Open-fist punches, forearms, elbows, knees, flat foot kicks, top foot kicks, headbutts, etc.
You could use a great many holds, including most of the popular MMA finishers. Chokeholds are illegal, but strangleholds are allowed, and most of the popular MMA "chokes" are strangles anyways.
Foreign objects would be phrohibited, and the ref not seeing it wouldn't be enough to avoid disqualification. Touching the ropes would break any hold or pin attempt, as would going under the ropes. You'd be allowed to leave the ring for a 10 count, changing the complexion of the matches quite a bit from their MMA cousins, and the most important difference, the main way to win a match would be to pin your opponent's shoulders to the mat for 3 count, though submissions and knockouts would count too.
The matches wouldn't have rounds, but would have time limits. Occasional no time limit matches would be ok. An initial setup could be 15 minutes for televised matches & TV Title matches, 20 for non-televised matches, 30 for state/regional/national title matches and title contention matches(No. 1 contender, etc.), and an hour for world title matches.
Of course, a great many things would be allowed, but would rarely, if ever, come up. You'd be allowed to jump off the ropes, hit people into the turnbuckle pads, and do canadian destroyers and flying headscissors, but they would probably not happen too often.
Depending on how the crowd reacts, you could either work storylines and angles, or let the matches stand on their own. Either way would be fine with me. But the matches themselves would be total shoots, each and every time.
So, what do you guys think of my idea? As fans of professional wrestling and MMA, you guys would be the main target audience.
