Subconsiously, I find that wrestlers in black trunks seem more "big time" and like serious competitors. HHH never looked as "legit" when we began wearing blue and red trunks during his Evolution days, or when he switched to white boots.
Colors always seem jobberish, IE Cody Rhodes. Although it's never stopped Hulk Hogan and CM Punk, so who knows.

One thing Honky Tonk Man pointed out in one of his shoots. If a wrestler gets put in baby blue ring gear, he's on the way out

It's because they bought a huge stock of black trunks...
To me it's just laziness and lack of imagination.
I don't think colours are "jobberish", and black is as generic as it gets... not Big Time at all IMO.
Hogan became Hogan wrestling in bright yellow. Macho Man had colourful robes and orange/pink trunks. Ric Flair wore different colours. I won't mention Ultimate Warrior...
Hell, Bret Hart got insanely over with PINK attire!
The recent black-o-mania is the stupidest thing ever happend in terms of wrestling choreographies. Every wrestler looks the same. The only difference is the logo on the butt, and lately even that has become a cheap tribalish design with the name in it.

When everyone's in black trunks, it does get pretty weak. And while there isn't anything inherently lame about colors, I imagine most in the business view simple black trunks as a sign of being "a serious badass." Of course, in the world of pro wrestling, if the powers-that-be wanted pink to be the new badass, all they'd have to do is push it as such. Ten, twenty years of all the tough guys wearing neon pink trunks and everyone will think that only jobbers wear plain black.

Booker also wears white and red and I felt he looked more natural in his Harlem Heat tights. In some cases I think it's that whatever designs they have on them work better against a black background.

Maybe fashion has something to do with it. I can't claim to be an expert, but it seemed like in the 70's and 80's, it wasn't really considered garish for guys to wear such loud colors, whereas black wasn't really as in style. Then fashion reversed the trend some, especially among the crowd they were trying to reach in the attitude era. Now, bright colors are coming back some for men, but still not on the same level.

Booker also wears white and red and I felt he looked more natural in his Harlem Heat tights. Totally agree. When he dug them out of the wardrobe for the 2007 Rumble, I marked like hell. Pity he was eliminated in 5 seconds.

With all the black trunks I'm amazed Michael Hayes hasn't gone crazy yet.
But seriously I prefer black because it's more professional and a call to the past wrestlers such as Lou Thesz among others.

Wrestlers' looks are rather more toned down these days than the bright colours, tassels and so on of Macho Man, Ultimate Warrior, etc. Whenever I see clips of HHH in those bright purple trunks he wore for a time, I can't help thinking how odd it looks.
Can just see Taker in a light blue outfit instead of black. Gods, that denim shirt was bad enough.
