I was at the event last night and to be honest it wasn't a bad show at all. But then again I didn't have my hopes up and the last big wrestling event I went to was D2D.
The attendance was far from a total bust. The top section of Phillps was tarped off and the nose sections of the arena were not used. There was a hefty smattering of empty seats through out the floor and bottom sections. Overall I'd say 2,500 in attendance tops.
The show opened w/ a taped interview of NWA champ Adam Pierce pretty much giving a state of the union address type promo about the NWA. Nobody really cared.
Decent opener between Dibiase and Idol Stevens. Dibiase has strong potential. Very similiar in look and style to Cody Rhodes. Stevens on the other hand is pretty dull and generic. I've seen his OVW stuff. The guy has potential to be that flamboyant cocky heel but I didn't see that last night.
I'm glad I sat near some NWA Anarchy fans during the triple threat match b/c I had no idea who these guys were. They were chanting "Iceberg" ala "Goldberg", which only got the children (and there were alot of kids there last night) to chant "Goldberg". All three guys worked well. Your average triple threat type spots but everything was well timed and fluid. Great match.
The Hall of Fame ceremony kept the pace. Thank God Cornette was there to do the honors instead of some randon NWA suit. Koloff got a strong reaction, Iron Shiek was impossible to understand. Eaton and Condrey were cool to see together again. Tommy Rich is still one heck of a talker. I thought it was funny how all the hall of famers spoke about the state Georgia as if it was the mecca of the universe. But it kept the fans in tune and got a good reaction. There were a couple of Flair name drops but no award or any mention to him being pulled from the show.
We then had an impromptu match of sorts between Abdullah the Butcher and Tommy Rich which involved the two guys sticking each other with forks for eight minutes outside the ring. Nothing too note worthy.
Next match was pot bellied and balding Syxx-Pac and the Blue Demon vs. Rob Conway and Carl Oulette. Conway was OK. Ouelette was a surprise to see and can still work a great match.
Funny story about Blue Demon. I had no clue who the guy was but Blue Demon masks were being sold at the merchandise table so I assumed he was some top babyface local guy from NWA Anarchy. Before the main event, the announcer informed the crowd that Full Throttle Blue Demon energy drinks were being handed out for free outside the arena after the match. So basically the guy had a shill gimmick to help advertise a drink. Its odd to put it in perspective on how Sean Waltman was once part of the hottest stable in wrestling to now tagging up w/ a guy who's gimmick was created to plug a can of pop. But I must say it was an entertaining match.
Quakenbush vs. Vega was a treat and I marked out when MQ was announced. This is why I bought tickets for the event. Along w/ seeing greats I grew up watching I knew that some quality indy guys would also be showcased and I was right and I have no regrets about it.
D2D on the otherhand....
The triple threat tag match was another above average match. Real American Hero's are your typical indy tag team. The Naturals are good workers but again very dull and generic. They came out wearing pink and black and I overheard alot Hart Foundation comparisons. I just shook my head. The champs: Los Luchadors, I believe, had a decent arsenal of high flying moves.
Sid vs. Playas Club was a bit of a let down. It was strictly a squash match. I was hoping Sid would of been paired off against an experienced worker (Adam Pierce where were you?) so the two could have a classic semi-main event match. Instead we got two greenies bouncing off the canvas and tumbling off stretchers. This match failed.
The main event match between the Expresses was a real treat for me, but fans started making their way out if the arena to quickly get there hands on Full Throttle energy drink && a Blue Demon coozie to boot!!1!
Classic, classic old school tag team match. Because of their age everything seemed to be moving in slow motion but I was able to appreciate it for what it was and it was a fun match to watch.
I personally, would not have booked this match as the main event even though it very much deserved to be. To have a big NWA event w/o the current world champ there was completely senseless. They should have atleast had a number one contenders match involving Sid. It was as if the title ment nothing to the organization. There was also very little mention to the current NWA. Just a rallying of the troops type message during the Hall of Fame ceremony. But no plug for the website or future shows. But they did advertise the crap out of Aarons furniture and Full Throttle Energy drink had its very own wrestler.
Now I'm as critical as any internet wrestling fan but I just don't have the heart to to be too critical regarding last nights show. It was what it was. What it wasn't was a total BS, "where's my refund" ECW D2D card or total embarrassment to the industry like that Hero's of Wrestling PPV. It was NWA wrestlings future and and its past simply doing what it has done for the past 60 years.
