I couldn't care less about wrestlers backstage,I prefer character over workrate(Connecting with the crowd means a smurf of a lot more then knowing fake moves, go ask Steve Austin or Mick Foley), I have been a huge fan of WWE since I was born(Although I hate Attitude Era), and I have been bored to tears by current puro (Although I'll always watch when their is a gaijin/foregner). I guess your opinion of a "smark" doesn't hold true to everyone.
I may have discovered many promotions, and many wrestlers I would not have otherwise known about without the internet, wrestling was a lot more fun and had a certain mystique to it that is all but forgotten.
Oh and on an off note, no I do not bring up wrestling with most people. I usually talk about movies or MMA, which thankfully most people can admit to loving without sounding like a dork.

Well, technically, everyone in this thread is the smark (whether they like the label or not doesn't matter). And if you can read this post, you're part of the IWC too.
As for myself, I'm comfortable being a smark. It's not something I deny to look like a "rebel."

I like thinking I'm smarter than the average fan (hard-camera, swerve) but it's ruined ALOT of pre wrestling to me. Like the dirty list of wrestling urban legends, alot of my "Smarkdom" has taken away that guttural reaction to alot of wrestling.
So yes AND no.
Wow, a gray area.

To put it simply, if you know what workrate, angle, storyline, and selling mean (in relation to pro wrestling), then you're a smark. Unless you're part of the wrestling business, then you're an insider.

who gives a s***, a wrestling fans a wrestling fan in my opinion Best post so far No, no, no. Do NOT lump me in with some mark in his John Cena t-shirt, his DX glowsticks and Rey Mysterio replica mask. I read the 'net. I order from RF Video. I rant on message boards. There is a tremendous difference in the type of fan I am and the type of fan above I described. And to say otherwise, is a slap in the face of me and my other smark brethen.

Promoters don't care what kind of fan you are, your money is the same color as the kid in the DX shirt's parents' money. As long as you are a fan you're a mark to them.

i think i'm a nice mix of "smark" and "mark". i do read wrestlezone, watch ROH and enjoy other indy federations, but i don't rub that into peoples faces. i still enjoy wwe and like to discuss the shows, but i don't "mark out" for kennedy or santino.
also, wtf is workrate?

Workrate, a wrestler's use of "work" to develop a match. One's workrate is determined by his or her ability to "work" in an intelligent and productive manner. When used by critics, it is an analysis of the action in a match and the skill level exhibited.

Not really.
Especially if with "smark" we mean the stereotypical guy who will go out of his way to show his massive "knowledge" of the business. Like calling wrestlers with their real name, or reporting every dirtsheet rumour like gospel-truth, or belittling marks' points of view etc etc.
I don't think it takes too much in this day and age to be a "smart fan". Just access to the internet and a decent interest in wrestling. The "truth" will just hit you sooner than later.
I try to make good use of my status of smart fan. I enjoy watching the product for what it is, while trying to guess where and why they decided to go this or that way. And of course I like discussing about it. But always keeping in mind it's the televised production of a staged fight, so it follows the rules of any other tv show.
Acting all smart and smark is annoying IMO. Knowing Umaga isn't actually a savage Samoan, or Yokozuna wasn't actually Japanese, or Triple H's name is Paul Levesque isn't rocket science or something people should be "proud" of.

Being a smark is no different to knowing about what films are being made by Hollywood and who's acting in them.
We know the person on the screen isn't really like that but we're judging them on how they convince us and how they perform.
Some people sit back and enjoy it and others don't. And they're right to do either one/

I'm proud that I know a lot about wrestling which is something I have loved since I was a little kid. I talk about it at work, and but a lot of times I stop myself and think wow I'm a loser. I'm comfortable those with that so its no big deal. I also don't thing there is wrong being a mark, I think we are all marks for something. Most Smarks i have meet are marks just for different stuff. I'm a mark for wwe an roh. I like cheesy crap stuff and i love pure wrestling. Its what makes wrestling so great too me. Its liking watching movies. u can watch the best picture at the Oscars and some low rate b movie and be entertained by both for different reason.

Knowing Umaga isn't actually a savage Samoan, or Yokozuna wasn't actually Japanese, or Triple H's name is Paul Levesque isn't rocket science or something people should be "proud" of. What you said. Anyway, judging by the OP's definition, I'm not a smark in the least bit. I'm not a big fan of that label since we all can't agree on it. I learned the hard way the IWC is not one opinon. There's such thing as popular opinons, some of which I share with my fellow members, and some I disagree with. What I really can't stand is those "so-called" anti-smarks who think they are being rebellious just because they are bashing members of these forums. They are not different from other members, just have a different opinon. That is all. I can be critical at the product from time to time, I don't have a problem with big men as the business needs variety, I don't follow backstage stuff because its none of my concern, I haven't watched a second of ROH, but I will give it a chance. So yeah, like everybody else, my opinons vary. So what does that make me?
