Latest in the Tommy Urbanski case (former wrestler allegedly shot by someone in Pacman Jones' entourage early last year in Vegas) is that his wife claims NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell had promised to help the family pay its medical bills but has since reneged on the offer. She said he twice told them that they'd keep in touch, but then never called back. Over SuperBowl weekend, Goodell said, "I'm sorry about the trgedy the family is going through, but I don't feel we have any responsibility." A civil lawsuit is still pending. They are challenging a court decision that stated the NFL and Tennessee Titans had no legal responsibility for what Jones did that night. The Urbanski's claim was that the Titans knew Pacman was insane prior to the incident but didn't suspend him until afterwards, and had they acted sooner he wouldn't have been sent to the club as part of the festivities on the 2007 All-Star Game weekend.
As expected, IWGP Champion Shinsuke Nakamura beat IWGP v.3 Champion Kurt Angle in a unification match in the main event of the New Japan show on February 17th at Tokyo Ryogoku Kokugikan. Match only went 13:55 but was said to be excellent. They traded all the submission attempts at the end and Nakamura reversed out of the ankle lock into a cross armbreaker for the clean submission. It's abundantly clear now that Inoki's IGF promotion and New Japan are working together and have probably been working together since day one.
There was an IGF show the day prior and Tomko showed up, threw down his IWGP Tag Team belt, and then beat Alexander Otsuka in an MMA-style match. It looked like he was bailing on New Japan, but he still showed up the next day and, along with partner Giant Bernard, dropped the tag belts to Togi Makabe & Toru Yano, the same team that put over the Dudleys last month. All the New Japan guys lost on this show as AJ Styles also put over Hiroshi Tanahashi in a good match. Only TNA guy who won was Chris Daniels, but of course he's not Chris Daniels in TNA so that doesn't count. They had Jeremy Borash there to do ring intros and such, but I wouldn't expect to see any of this on TNA TV.
The entire point of the big vow renewal segment was to try to stop the trend of ratings dipping as Impact went on. Well, it kind of failed. The final segment this week did grow from the previous segment, but it was still the fourth highest-rated segment on the program. Worse, after hitting 1.7 million viewers, a new record, a few weeks back, they were down to a 1.08 here and 1.5 million viewers. They did an 0.78 in males 18-49, and 0.55 in persons 18-49, and an 0.68 in males 18-34. Quarters were 1.10, 1.09, 0.99, 1.08, 0.98, 1.01, 0.91 and 1.03, so they were all over the place.
Even though he claimed he was heading to TNA to sign a contract last week, Jonny Fairplay has not signed.
Joe is reportedly under a long-term deal.
In good news for TNA, they snagged the Jakks Pacific deal that will be expiring soon with WWE. WWE in turn announced that they were moving to Mattell. Both deals, however, don't go into effect until 2010
