I'll try and look for it from a Kayfabe perspective.
So HBK beats Flair at Wrestlemania.
Batista is peeved at HBK for beating his mentor.
HBK fakes an injury to beat Batista at Backlash.
And as a result....Batista basically kills HBK at ONS.
So...let me get this straight....
We are supposed to root for a man who pretty much destroyed another man all because he retired a 60+ year old man and faked an injury in one match?
.....Am I missing something here?

Eh, well, at least he's being the face in an angle that had no real distinguishing heels.

Batista is about the only face who is a serious threat to the title.

Yeah, Batista's the heeliest babyface since the glory days of Hulk Hogan. He has almost no redeeming qualities, kayfabe speaking, but the fans go nuts for him.

Batista is about the only face who is a serious threat to the title. I get that. I really really do. Smackdown is depleted of main event talent and it's a shame on a show that once bragged tonnes of main event talent. But at least book your No 1 face as a face, for pete sake.

Eh, in wrestling, if you punish someone for doing something heelish then it's a face act, regardless of how poorly thought out it was.

Well, yeah, but I don't really see playing possum as a heelish act. Hell, Bret Hart used to do it all the time when he was the biggest face in the company. I know that that history doesn't amount to much, and you DID say "poorly thought out", but still...

Does the face always have to be a goody 2 shoes?

HBK played it up like crazy after the match and lied about it, not admitting to it until Jericho kept giving him a bunch of crap about the situation.

I know that that history doesn't amount to much, and you DID say "poorly thought out", but still... They haven't exactly done much in this angle as far as defining certain things as face/heel tactics. Michaels faking his way to a cheap win could be seen as either a heelish move, or "doing what he has to do to survive." Jericho calling him out for it and making fun of him in various segments could either be seen as him being a jackass heel, or him being a goofy smart-ass face. Batista not accepting the fact that Shawn retired Flair could be seen as him being a jealous douchelord, or it could be seen as him caring about his friend and not wanting him to have to stop doing what he loves. The only real time they tried to make anything clear was when HBK admitted he was faking, which from my perspective seemed to be a ploy to get him a bit of heel heat. That obviously failed though, as he'd need to do something far worse for the average fan to boo him, so they just kept along with the "grey area" method.

Does the face always have to be a goody 2 shoes? No, but it would help if he was actually seen as some sort of a good guy. Doing the right thing most of the time and whatnot. Giving a guy mercy after you powerbombed him once and then slapped him onto a stretcher would have been a good guy thing to do. Pushing him off the stretcher and beating him a bit more all because you can is just plain heelish.

Fair enough. Shawn "lost his smile" with a "knee injury", and next thing you knew, everyone hated Bret.
Have you forgotten that CM Punk is carrying around a certain briefcase? What's wrong with letting him cash it in and giving him the title?

I think a lot of why Batista is over, is because he sees through BS and just gets his way by beating up his enemies.
It works.

The other would be when he gave Big Show a chicken and a goat. ;D
