Since all bands were local bands at one point, I just kind of wondered if anyone had seen a band live at some show and then years later heard them on the radio.

Saw Tim McGraw when he was opening for Blackhawk.
Saw Pantera when they were opening for Skid Row.
Saw GnR when they were opening for Aerosmith.
Any of those count or do you mean.. before they were signed ?

Not yet but I'm hoping the Woodbox Gang breaks bigtime at some point.

Copeland. (Note: Not Edge, nor the troll who used to post here)
MCR as they were starting to get big but not full blast "omg everyone hate this band...NOW" mode just yet.

I saw MCR pre-Three Cheers Finch pre-What It Is To Burn
Other than that, I mostly go to hardcore/punk/thrash shows, so most of those bands.. don't get that big.

Nope, but I've seen several bands on the way down. So far down, the next rung would be begging for changed outside the place they playing.

I saw David Gray at Club Gotham in Cincinnati back in the mid 90's after I won free tickets from a cd store. I was only 19 at the time, so I couldn't drink. But I did get a free cassette single of "Sell, Sell, Sell" which he autographed, "Rock on Jeff, David Gray." I still have it to this day, and think of that night every time I play White Ladder. Club Gotham closed a couple years later.

I seen No Doubt when they were opening for Bush - they were just new on the scene, "Just A Girl" had just came out on the radio.

Closest thing so far would be Protest The Hero a year before their debut record came out in Canada, when they opened for Sum 41, they stole the show that night

Jimmy Eat World before "In the Middle" was on MTV. They were on tour with Green Day and Blink 182.
Also, Puddle of Mudd. In fact my older brother met the band before they got a deal.

I was gonna go see Franz Ferdinand at the Coop at UCLA before they were big... But I got too wasted and passed out. Then, within a couple months, they were huge and I haven't been able to see them since.

They still haven't "made it" yet, but they're much more well-known now than they were when I saw them as a fledgling local band - Resident Hero.

Same deal here, but a completely different band: James Brown Car Alarm (who I remember seeing as vanishbox back in the high school days at my high school; all three members of the band graduated high school the same time I did).

I saw Drowning Pool playing for maybe 35-40 people tops on more then one occasion in the late 90's. They were just some local band. I almost s*** myself when I saw "Bodies" on MTV and then a few months later, the WWF is using it.
I saw Flyleaf as an opening act a few times, way before they had any hits.

Dropkick murphy's
And because I love this story: My father went to see Led Zepplin in the early 70's at the Boston Garden. The warm up band? Some new local group named Aerosmith.

I saw Missy Higgins (She is kind of big in Australia) at a Triple J Unearthed Gig back in 2001.
Unearthed is a thing that radio station JJJ FM do to look for new talent.
Not a fan of hers though.
Also saw Wolfmother play on one of the small stages at the 2005 Big Day Out. This was about 6 months before they got really popular.
