With all the steroid scandals that have gone on in the past, having CM Punk as your "straight edge" champ is actually a great public relations move on the WWE's part.

Yyyyyyyyyep.
That definitely had a part of it.
But, it COULD be because CM Punk is a phenominal wrestler loved by the fans, and a merchandise machine.
But, it COULD be because it's good PR.

I didn't mean that was the only reason he got the push, but I do think it's a good move. The guy can work, the crowd loves him, and he fits in with the no drugs campaign. Yyyyyyyyyep. no, horrible PR move.
in fact, this will probably lead to them becoming like 2001 WCW

Good PR? I think someone out there in the mainstream media has to notice and report on it before it can even count as a PR move in general.

The way I see it is the way I remember my parents encouraging me to be a Hulk Hogan fan when I started watching wrestling. They were smart and did what they could to make this "Say no to drugs, say your prayers and eat your vitamins" guy who stood for good and fought evil be my favorite wrestler growing up. Punk will probably be pushed as an inspiration to youngsters and parents will probably respond that way.
And since parents decide what is spent form the checkbook towards WWE.. they will go after who they think will best help the development of the idea of good and evil, right and wrong in their childs minds.

I think Punk sends a good message to the media. Now if anyone ever brings up steroids to Vince, he can say that the World Champion of the top show is drug and alcohol free.

It's a good PR move, but it has the added benefit of being deserved. Great wrestlers who don't do drugs ought to be rewarded.

I wouldn't say CM Punk is media-recognized or recognizable yet...
He's still way below the radar.
He got the belt because he was Mr. Money in the Bank and RAW needed a Champion. I doubt WWE have plans to push Punk as their new Top Guy. At least for now. As long as Cena and Batista are around (not to mention HHH, HBK and Orton) I can't see Punk in other role than Jericho's around 2000

I think it's a good move. It's a bit too soon aswell.
As someone said though, he's not such a mega star yet though. With all his tattoo's and piercings, he just looks like someone parents wouldn't advise their child to follow, and unfortunately with certain people, they never stay around long enough to dissuade their first opinion. But of course! Anyone who says any so with interest will also be shot down by the fact he is Straight Edge, Vinces way of getting back at certain people perhaps?

Cena was the guy they were pushing as the squeaky clean role model type. I doubt they go near it with Punk.

While that may have been their thinking, the media won't even notice. The only way they would care if they could do a story about something scandalous to get a ratings boost.
I think they mainly did it to freshen things up. Who else would they have put the strap on? Cena, Batista, and JBL are your only real options. If they weren't in the middle of a feud, you could add Jericho and HBK as well.
With JBL, I think that would just stagnate things. Cena and Batista have been world champs and will likely be so again. No, for this I think they were going for something new, something to boost ratings.
I think Punk was a good choice. He's over with the younger and older viewers. He's somebody who always has good matches. I think the 'E may play up the straight edge thing, but in the overall scheme of things, and where the media is concerned, it doesn't matter much.

They could have put the belt on Cena or Batista. They could have had someone else win the briefcase or beat Punk to win it.

With all the steroid scandals that have gone on in the past, having CM Punk as your "straight edge" champ is actually a great public relations move on the WWE's part. Comments? Not really. Most people probably wouldn't be able to get past that he looks kind of like a creep with the hair and the tattoos.

And the follow up question would be "oh thats great, but what about the other 100+ wrestlers you employ?" You think guys like Batista and Cena are on steroids? Surely you jest. For the last time, can the "Cena's on the juice!" stuff be put to rest until someone provides physical, documented proof. Hell, in the midst of burying any and all things WWE during one of his ridiculous shoots, Kurt Angle even took time to tell the interviewer John Cena is, and always has been, clean. I'm sure he wouldn't have said that if it was not true. With all the steroid scandals that have gone on in the past, having CM Punk as your "straight edge" champ is actually a great public relations move on the WWE's part. Comments? Not really. Most people probably wouldn't be able to get past that he looks kind of like a creep with the hair and the tattoos. This is a pretty fair statement. Punk is cool to me, but I doubt rolling out a guy who looks like he just got out of rehab and saying, "Look at our drug-free, non-steroid using champion," is going to make a big impression on the public at large.
