I just got done watching this film (the release was delayed in the UK due to similarities to a recent child abduction case, thankfully I bought the DVD in the USA) and I thought it was really good. I'm really glad to see Casey Affleck maturing into a pretty good actor (and not just being known as Ben Affleck's brother) and performances like this and Jesse James are really helping. And although I've always liked Ben Affleck (can never understand why so many men hate him) he directed one hell of a good film.
But there is a question I have to anyone who has seen this film... Did he make the right decision at the end by giving the daughter to a unsuitable mother and by taking her away from a loving family?

Great film.
I don't think he made the right choice.
I think the child would have clearly been better off with Morgan Freeman and his wife.

I'm going to have to say that one, it's a GODDAMN shame that more people haven't seen this terrific movie, yet f***ing EPIC MOVIE is STILL selling like hotcakes at Hollywood Video; and two, yeah, I think he DID make the right choice. He did what not only the LAW, but human decency says is the right thing; that little girl had a mother who was worried about her, and that mother deserved to have her girl back....at least until the law and the courts say otherwise. Morgan had no right to swoop in and snatch the girl away. Kidnapping IS kidnapping, no matter the intentions behind it. Now, he COULD have lobbied the state to take the girl away, and put her in foster care, or place her up for adoption. But you don't just deem yourself the sole purveyor of right and wrong and go TAKING someone's child.

On a side note, back in High School, my friends and I used to do "illicit activities" at the Quincy, MA quarry where they did filming for this movie.

I can't even count the stories my dad's told me about the crazy shit at the quarries, plus my own little happy tales. I wouldn't dare jump in that s***hole now, though. I'd rather gulp from the harbor than jump in that thing. Oh, and this movie was amazing. More so because I've been EVERYWHERE in it.

Good film.
And I'd say he did the wrong thing for the right reason, if that makes any sense.

I lived in the bordering town of Braintree growing up. yes, illicit activities at the quarries were the 12-15 year old version of doing something crazy. That and taking the T into Boston. And yes this movie is outstanding. And he made the "right" decision, but not the best one.

He made the right choice. Was it the better choice? No, but the right choice isn't always the easiest.

I don't understand how anyone would make the other choice after devoting all that time and energy towards getting the girl back to her mother.

Loved the movie. These two scenes put Casey Affleck way over in my book. www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3oxRvJZg9EAnd the dialogue from when he confronts Cheese. "Cheese, if you ever disrespect her again like that, I'm gonna pull your f***in' card, okay? So you're saying you didn't do it, fine. We'll take your money, and we'll be on our way. When it turns out you're lying, I'm gonna spend every nickel of that money to f*** you up. I'm gonna bribe cops to go after you, I'm gonna pay guys to go after your weak f***in' crew, and I'm gonna tell all the guys I know that you're a C.I. and a rat, and I know a lot of people. And after that, you're gonna wish you listened to me, 'cause your shitty pool hall crime syndicate headquarters is gonna get raided, and your doped-up bitches are gonna get sent back to Laos, and this f***in' retard right here is gonna be testifying against you for a reduced sentence, while you're gettin' cornholed in your cell by a gang of crackers. 'Cause from what I've heard, the guys that get sent up Concord for killing kids, life's a motherf***er." And as for the OP's question on choice, while it was difficult, he did the right thing by returning the girl to her biological mother. Was it necessarily the best thing to do? No, but it was right because as good intentioned as the chief was, he had no right to concoct a scheme to steal the girl away from her Mom - no matter how screwed up she was. There were legal means of recourse he could have taken.

See, that's what makes this film so great; you the viewer are left to make a choice between what's morally right and the law.
I watched this a while back, and thought it was terrific. I couldn't choose then which path I'd take and I still can't.

Love this film, obviously..., but I agree with HoagieWithPastrami, wrong decision for the right reason.
