You ever notice when a game or movie is reviewed and people go nuts if it's not the best score possible? Or you go on IMDB and see that the only scores given are 1 or 10?
When exactly did the day arrive that a 7/10 was a terrible score for a game or movie?

See...there's these things called "fanboys".
And these "fanboys" are insane.
If whatever it is they're creaming their pants over this week doesn't get rated perfect by (insert rating people here), then they riot.
That's the short version.

There is some sort of trend that if something is not the Best, it's somehow the Worst.
Look at the Olympics:
What ever happened to being happy that you won the Silver Medal?
Since when was the Bronze Medal a sign of failure?

Was talking about this with my girlfriend * the other day... nothing can be just mediocre now, and every single film on IMDB has someone saying "it's the best ever" and someone else saying "it's the worst ever"... personal choice aside, surely Schindler's List can't be anyone's worst ever film, unless that's the only one they've ever seen. *BTW - she's a 10. Your wimmins? 1. At best.

Since when was the Bronze Medal a sign of failure? Ha, I blame the Simpsons for that one when some Olympic guy said people would be going for the Gold, So-so Silver, and shameful Bronze. Bronze is like an 8/10 man.

Some gaming comic(I wanna say it was either VG Cats or Penny Arcade, but I could be wrong) did a really great little comic about this concept.

Yes. When it comes to the important things in life (ya know IMDB, TMZ, Hotornot.com) there can only be absolutes. Now, things like the rule of law, well that's negotiable.

In videogames it's all about ruthless marketing... Silly fanboys won't stand on queue in the dead of the night for putting their hands on a game that got 80-ish/100... So EVERYTHING has to be hailed as "teh bestest" or "revolutionary" (often meaning convoluted and unnecessary complicated) or "breathtaking".
When I first got into videogames (late 80s-early 90s) a game that got over 80 was already considered a "must have", and 90s were few and far between.
Now it looks like every game coming out with fanfare, bells and whistles is worth 90 AT LEAST. And I refuse to think the Nth sequel of an already established franchise can set the standard in such an emphatic way.
About movies, I guess it's the same story... Superlatives sell, and so they're used a plenty, most of the time with no good reason.

We live in a culture where being called average has become unacceptable. Tehcnically, most films should be a five, and 1 and 10 should be preserved for theory only.

If a Video Game was a 5/10, it should be an average game that people would play. However, go look at something that got a 5/10 now, they are the worst of the worst and virtually unplayable. A 7/10 is considered mediocre. And a 2/10 is unheard of. You should have as many 1/10 as you do 10/10, or else your scale is just a bunch of arbitrary numbers that are there to make people feel special.

And what is considered a 10, should be basically flawless, or at the very least, head and shoulders above everything else. Unless of course, the market is so filled with crapware that a crappy game is average.

But at least some time ago there still was some sort of "consistency" in ratings. Sure it was unbalanced and leaning too much on the higher end of the scale but it still was kinda clear...
Games below 60 were usually playable but heavily flawed Between 60 and 70 were nothing to write home about Between 75 and 80 they were worth a rent or limited to a niche target, but very playable 80 was the threshold of "good game" 85 was great already The very few games over 90 were those who were setting the new standard for future releases in the same genre.
Now every other game is over 90, and that means:
a) games developers have become almost infallible, Godlike figures b) reviewers get money to inflate the ratings
Anyway most gamers have become total sheeps and will drool over Famous Game #241 just because there's a couple of new features and even more shiny graphic on the same, old and safe, game.
In my almost 20 years as avid-then-moderate-then-bored gamer, I can count on the fingers of ONE hand the games I've played and I've thought "wow, that's really somthing".
