On the beginning of the Mick Foley dvd, he says something like "... you're a pro wrestling fan so probably not dating much...". Was Mick simply joking here and playing off the stereotype of a wrestling fan or was he actually alienating some by re-affirming the stereotype?

He said it ion a very joking and sarcastic manor so I would say he was just kidding around. Meaning that if your a wrestling fan who buys DVD's you must be an ultimate geek. Or something along those lines I think that's what he was intending

It's that obvious a joke that he must be saying it in a ironic manner.

I yelled "SMURF YOU MICK!" in a loving sense everytime he gets to that point on the DVD.

Actually, as much as you may not want to admit it, Foley was probably genuine. Jericho makes one or two similar comments in his biography, which I would happily quote here but I can't be bothered to walk to my study and grab my copy.
Fact is, if you attend many autograph sessions or live events and check out the average "hardcore" fans, you will see that most are unkempt, pale, possibly overweight and sporting faded Austin 3:16 shirts. It's almost ironic that wrestling fans look nothing like their heros. You'll be hard pressed to find a tanned, muscular, confident Randy Orton lookalike in the crowd at an indie wrestling show. Only his polar opposite.
And don't even get me started on the ones that walk around the popcorn stands with replica belts thrown over their shoulders. Put it this way, if you had a healthy relationship with a beautiful woman, or an active dating lifestyle with hot chicks every week, you wouldn't be wasting $2000 of vacation, gift, dinner, lingerie, concert and music money on a piece of fake gold. BELIEVE ME.

And was there an element of seriousness in the comment? Does Foley hold some fans in contempt? There was hints of this in Have a Nice Day I believe.

Hey he knows wrestling fans can't really be insulted. I mean most of the people on here have bought a book or two by a certain real deal who constantly talks about how unbelievable it is someone bought a book with the word wrestling and/or crap in the title.

But yeah you do make some points, and especially on the replica belt holders I see at the indy shows I attend. Really annoying,IMO. And don't even get me started on the individuals who feel going to a wrestling show>>personal hygeine.

Have you seen some of the threads on this forum? Put a picture of Mickie James in here and you'll see 20 pages of masturbation references. It's almost embarrassing.
So yes, I would agree with Mick on this one.

Nah, he's kidding.
It's a stereotype that every wrestling fan has nothing better to do but sit in their parent's basement and blog about all things wrestling.

I've seen a lot of regular wrestling fans, myself included. I think Mick has a case.
