So I was watching a football match on the TV and at the half time I changed the channel to Music Max and they were doing a 'Top Songs Of 1991'. Now 1991 was quite a significant year for music with top albums released by Metallica, Nirvana, Massive Attack, Anthrax, Primal Scream and Pearl Jam you would think they would rank highly. But oh no I'm guessing Music Max's key demographic is Baby Boomers because here is the top 3: 3. Losing My Religion - R.E.M (Not bad. I will say this track is a key song of 1991 and has a great music video) 2. Touch Myself - Divinyls (Err Ok) 1. NO I'm gonna let you guess. Why? Because you will never guess it in a million years. When you have think you have the right answer click the link below to see what this Music channel thinks was the most significant track of 1991. You will be gobsmacked: www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKPAOq8WyskNo I'm not kidding that Topped a most a list of the Best Songs Of 1991. I could not believe it I thought surely someone made a mistake. Anyway for reading this here is my Most Important Song of 1991 enjoy:

According to Wikipedia it was released in 1991 to promote the home video release of Grease. And
The song was the 3rd most bought single in Australia in 1991 having hit #1 for 5 weeks in May 1991, and also reached #3 in the United Kingdom.
f*** this country can be stupid sometimes. Yes while the rest of the world was getting into the Seattle music scene Australia was buying songs recorded in the f***ing 70s from a film set in the f***ing 50s.

But Grease was awesome, and thats an awesome mix. Its appeal is a lot larger then grunges would have been at the time, and probably still is.

But it is still wrong to put on a list of the most important songs of that year. Just because it topped the charts that year. Let me put it this way:
If you were to make list of best films of 1997 you would not include the original* Stars Wars trilogy because they did well at the box office during their re-release that year.
*with unnecessary Edits.

Directors cuts were around before then, but the shot heard around the world was Greedo's! ;D

LOL
Hellraiser.
I thought that was an actual video at first. But then I remembered it was never released as a single.
Good song by Ozzy, but 'AVH' FTW!!!

what was the criteria? if it was top songs on music charts, that grease BS could well have been it.
were they going for just 'most popular' song from that year, or influental? obviously that song wasnt influential, it didnt change the music scene to any extent. but that may not have been the criteria for the list.

When John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John can headline and help sell out musical festivals Worldwide, then we'll talk. I'm almost certain they'd have more success then Nirvana would atm.

My memory is a little fuzzy but didn't the whole megamix thing reach a bit of a peak around 90-91? I remember going to various parties and weddings around this time and hearing them, one in particular that mixed a bunch of songs from the 50s and 60s (Wake Up Little Susie was the only song I remember from it.)

How can any of those songs be justified as "important"?
What makes a song "important"?
Why do I keep putting quotation marks around the word "important"?

That doesn't mean it should qualify as the most important song of 1991. And if you can name anything relevant (outside of Australia) that Olivia Newton John has done since Physical, you get a cookie.

How was "Ice Ice Baby" not included? I'd say becuase it was released in 1990. Anyway, I don't get what the problem is with REM being included. REM were the biggest band in the world for a few years there and 'Religion' was the song that broke them.

Hellraiser is a great song, but I remember hearing Losing My Religion a thousand times more during that year.
