I would suggest that 23, being the number of Michael Jordan and LeBron James, would be the top number in sports. 33, being worn by Larry Bird and Kareem, is in the area.
Although 99, which has basically been retired by the entire NHL, if I remember correctly, could actually viewed in a league of its own.

Soccer: 10, having been Pele and Maradona's (among others) number, back before players having custom numbers.
Basket: 23
Ice Hockey: 99
Formula 1: 1 (reigning World Champion) and 27 (Gilles)
Back to soccer, I think this week is the right time to pay tribute to another glorious number

Baseball: 42. Jackie Robinson & Mariano Rivera. How do you argue with that?
Basketball: 23
Football: 80
