I wanted to, but looks like Ubuntu hates my ATI video adapter, and despite installing 5 different drivers, it still kept on freezing at random.
So smurf Ubuntu, I'll stick with XP as long as possible

Yes I am currently using Kubuntu 8.04. I'll be moving over to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS sometime in the near future. I've been using Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu since 7.04 Fiesty Fawn. IMO good stuff.
As stated above some video cards do have trouble with linux as ATI and Nvidia don't really offer open source drivers for linux.
As for Linux (overall) it is more powerful that Windows and there are tons of open-source (ie - free) software out there to help you customize your linux distro any way you want
Oh and for MCMGM Cornell you can download an iso of ubuntu at ubuntu.com

Is it better than Vista? I LOVED XP but was stupid enough to think Vista was the way to go when getting a laptop. I wish I would have gotten that XP model for $50 less.

I use it on my eMachines desktop and like it in general.
Open source has really changed the way I use the computer.
It runs pretty fast IMO when compared with Windows and can do pretty much anything you'd need a computer too. Ubuntu is super easy to use. I was always hesitant to use Linux, but this platform is much easier than Windows in some ways.
Don't use it if you're a serious gamer though. Not a lot of games are designed for Linux.
Try and get the Ubuntu creative suite too if you can.
The only real complaint/warning I would give is if you're really into video editing. A lot of crashing and to be honest open source video editing has just not come far enough.
Your best bet is to partition the harddrive if you really want to do some video editing and maintain Ubuntu.
That being said. I really like the clean feel and look of Ubuntu. Its bare-bones with the option to add only what you need.

I believe it is better than Vista. There is a slight learning curve with any of the main stream Linux distribution: Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSUSE (and a huge learning curve for the some like gentoo, slackware) but once you get used to it opens you up to what computing should be about (IE open source software where you can customize your OS/desktop/system any way you want) I made my Kubuntu system look like OSX The nice thing about Linux is that it is designed for security, IE there are no Viruses/Spyware/Malware for Linux. A default Ubuntu installation (for the most part) out of the box is pretty secure. IP Tables is the default firewall and (by default) does not have any open connections (if you install any server software such as ssh, apache, samba this open connections so be careful)

When I first saw the name of this thread, I thought it would be an old 80's joke I heard where the punchline was "Death by Ubuntu"

I run it on an old sony laptop (has the windows 98 sticker on it) and haven't had a major problem with it, it did take some tinkering to get youtube to work on firefox, but thats about it.

Since I'm working off of 2000, I'm going to give this a serious look. Thanks, MCMGM.
