I keep getting told how expensive hockey is for youngsters, but I wouldn't listen. I got him skating lessons and learn to play hockey lessons @ $109 a pop and he did those for close to a year, 8 or 9 weeks each group. Ok, no biggie, break it down and it was like.. $13 a lesson.
The Learn to Play Hockey stuff required that he had all the hockey gear, but did offer a buyback program for when he outgrew his stuff. Spent maybe $200 on gear & skates. Not so bad.
Sign him up for a team, one of the less expensive teams in the area at $825, on which you could make payments. Ok.. not so bad.
Gotta buy the jersey (home and away) $150 *grumbles*
Now there's tournaments and tournament fees *sigh* Nobody told me anything about those. We've got the Thanksgiving Tournament, the Nutcracker Tournament over Xmas (yeah, loved the name of that one) and I'm now getting the President's Day Tournament stuff.
Of course, in with all that, we have to have the team related hoodie / shirts/ baseball cap etc. $70 later..
Also have to go through with fund raisers every month. I hate hitting my family up for those.. they're old and on social security. Not sure how much the guys at work are going to keep up with it. Luckily, the Sperm Donor was able to sell a crapload of the Lottery Tickets.
Oh, wait.. did I mention Team Photographs ? Those aren't cheap either. I just hope the little booger appreciates that it's MOMMY and not Daddy who's forking over all the cash for this. It's MOMMY who drives his ass to practice twice a week and pays for public skate other times during the week.
He wonders why I call him my most expensive pet. It's fun watching him play and have fun though and he's not a half bad defenseman.
This kid owes me big time if he ever makes it to the NHL ! [/rant]

Wow. I'm glad I took up bowling rather then hockey as a kid.
I don't know how expensive kids hobbies like this or karate are, but some stuff on that list seems absurd for the price.

And my dad still bugs me since I signed up for baseball one year, then quit before practice. I finally agreed and did it next year although I really didn't want to. I ended up with a batting a .014 (yeah... ONE HIT... oddly enough off the pitcher was only girl player in the league). But my on base percentage was close to .400. Hooray for having no strike zone and even "scaring" a few pitchers by leaning in and taking pitches on my trick shoulders.

It will get better if he plays high school hockey. Most of the stuff is covered already, except for some of the extras and a few equipment items.

I didn't want to play because the games were on Saturday mornings and I wanted to watch cartoons. I also got ONE hit all season. It was a double, and it drove a man home, which caused us to win the game. It was our only win of the season, and the last game of the season. It was pretty much my moment of glory. *sigh*

It was pretty much my moment of glory. *sigh* Be glad you got your moment of glory. On that one hit I got, it was during a pick up of a delayed game (it was tied and in extra innings and got dark so we picked it up the next week.) I got the hit, ended up on third base with two outs. The head coach was by third and told me to run as far as I thought I could and then turn and run back. So I did. I was basically a few feet from home and was sure I could make it, but I did like she sad and ran back. The catcher was totally off guard too, but I didn't wanna "go into business for myself" and get in trouble although looking back I think she just wanted me to get out to end the game. Anyway, she told me to try to take home if I thought I could, but next pitch the catcher was ready. Then the next pitch was strike three and I ended up getting to homeplate before the ump made the call. EDIT: The closest I got to a great moment was everyone telling me about this pitcher on the other team (a friend from school was on that team) and how noone had gotten a hit off him all season. I mean, noone even connected. First pitch he threw to me, I fouled. He pitched me four balls afterwards and I did score on that drive. (we lost the game, though) Noone could believe I did that, as I was pretty much the crappiest player in the entire league, minus being "Walk King" which was my team nickname. I couldn't hit for crap and I couldn't field much better.

Everyone on a side got an At-Bat before we switched sides, because it was co-ed (meaning like 25-30 players per side) and most of the people didn't even try. My line : 2 AB, 2-2, 2 HR (both ITP, since there was no HR line), 7 RBI.

Wicked expensive, maybe he'll decide to go pro and make it to the St Louis Blues, or Edmonton Oilers if all else fails, then he'll be able to pay you back in a big bad way.

My brother wanted to go out for high school hockey and they provided NOTHING. It would've been about $1500 for equipment and sundry, probably more as he grew like a freakin' weed in H.S. and would've had to replace just about everything at least once. Of course now it's about 15 years ago. Adjust for inflation.
