Why is the idea of CM Punk being WHC on Raw so shocking and unbelievable? Not the fact that it happened so quickly, but the concept of him even being a world champion on this level.
It's not surprising.
1) The overall package of talent he brings to the table: Even I, who did not follow him in ROH or anywhere else prior to his WWE debut, can see what he offers.
2) The long sustained push prior to him cashing in MITB: No, you do not need to remain undefeated during a push- unless your character is a monster.
3) The direction WWE is attempting to go: Considering the poor publicity the company's suffered in their home country, wouldn't it be inevitable that they put one of their top titles on someone highly likely to remain scandal free?
4) It's NOT REAL: Also, what is this title run symbolizing? Punk didn't become a world champion for any real reason different to the reasons that Batista and Cena became world champions (when a promotion wants more money, they go with whoever they feel will generate the most at that time). Didn't Rey Mysterio even getting to touch that belt pave the way for someone much larger than him to win it (in otherwords, Punk)?
Given those reasons, I'm not too sure as to why wrestling fans are pinching themselves.

*sigh*
Some of this may be wrong, but I'm workin' off memory here, so sue me.
CM Punk is the first ROH guy to make it and succeed in WWE. Sure, Paul London and Brian Kendrick have won multiple tag titles, but Punk is a god-damned 2 time World Champ in WWE. People remember the times when Punk was slummin' it in the indies, workin' his ass off to make it. They remember him being a down-to-earth guy, a guy they could connect with, because he was pretty much going through the same real life struggle that they were. Now that he's succeeding, people feel good about it, because "one of us" is dominating the big leagues.
Someone had a much more in-depth version of this, and if they could supply it here, that'd be cool.

Punk was the last guy I thought would win the WHC. I thought he was just another boring ECW guy.

I think some assumed Punk would have a longer period of being established and elevated. I commend JBL for selflessly working to put over Punk in much the same way that Eddie Guerrero worked to put JBL over as a champion. As much as people criticize JBL for certain things (me included), he seems to truly care about the business and his putting over Punk when he seems to be really hurting is commendable.

If you mean the "Of Punk, WWE and us" thread, that's the topic I was thinking about a while ago that made me post this. I don't get how Punk's backstory sticks out from a lot of the wrestlers on the upper card- I really don't think that their roads are as dramatically "silver-spoon" as they're occasionally made out to be. If any fan wanted to hard enough, I think they could identify with just about any of the WWE superstars.
