Am I the only one who misses him in WWE? I realize that neither Kane nor Taker really need him anymore, but I think he was a great character.
On another related note, how did he come in acquisition of the Undertaker? When Taker first debuted, he was under the tutelage of Brother Love; how did Paul Bearer become his manager?

I miss him too. I think Brother Love was suppose to be temporary. Paul says on his shoot interview they pitched him the idea before Takers debut. He says that during the interview he told them he was an undertaker and they started laughing. He didn't know why they were laughing until they told him the gimmick.

Wow, I'd never seen that footage before. I always thought Brother Love vanished and Bearer just took over. Great find.
Interesting - Paul is completely different here than he's known for, adopting the solemn, heads bowed character (that, you know, is more realistic) instead of the gurning "ohhhhh yes" character which, admittedly, is far superior.

Did brother love have some sort of condition that did that to his face or was that makeup? Cause the principle of my high school had a condition that did that to him.

That's Bruce Prichard. He's an agent and producer for WWE. Yes, it's make-up.

I think the idea behind Brother Love's makeup was that he was supposed to be yelling so much his face was always red.
When I started watching wrestling, Paul Bearer had become "normal," without the white makeup and the jet black hair. After having seen his earlier work as the darker version, I think that his normal version was way better and less campy. I did like that one time when he and Taker were on Regis & Kathy Lee and Paul & Kathy Lee exchanged silly (but in character for Paul) looks for a bit. That was great.

Paul Bearer did all he could do with "his" characters, so it's ok him being gone.
On the other hand, I miss Brother Love. I've always thought he had a lot of potential, and I wonder why they faded him out do quickly.
I remember reading Pritchard had some serious drug problems at one point or another, but I think Brother Love could still work rather well today. But I have a soft spot for "religious" gimmicks.
Just imagine a feud between HBK and Brother Love's protegees... Good Bible Thumper v Greedy Preacher...

I'd love to see him come back like in that video. I loved his old "Oooooh yes, my untertaker will destroooooooy you!" gimmick but bringing him back as a calm and mournful man would fit today's WWE better and resurrect (hehe) the character in a fresh way.

I always just associated Bearer with Taker, and seen him as the best thing that could of happened to get the character over.
Brother Love, Ted Dibiase, no-one else could really fit as his manager, or whatever. Paul was created just for that and eventually, with Kane, spawned another superstar.

I don't necessarily miss Paul Bearer the character, but I think that Percy Pringle is sorely missed.
This guy has seen pretty much every side of the business, and would be a huge asset to WWE or TNA in terms of helping the newer guys with promos, understanding ring psychology, or just trying to build a good match.
But then again, since Percy has dropped a ton of weight and is doing awesome in terms of his health, this would be a great opportunity to do something with him on-screen, but just change the character. Heck, if Taker could change, and Kane has definitely changed from what he used to be, who says Bearer can't be different now?

Does anyone know why Bearer dropped the makeup for a while?I'm pretty sure he went back to wearing it before Taker made him rest in peace.

Brother Love made lots of sense in that era because back then, televangelists like Jimmy Swaggart and Jim Bakker were all over TV (and later became big news when they were disgraced as sexual deviants, embezzlers, etc.). It was a very relevant gimmick at the time. Now, not so much.

But with my dish I still get many odd channels with weird guys screaming about God in front of adoring audience (and asking for money to help God's plans). I'm not really up to date with American current situation in terms of TV preachers, but considering the fair share of born-again wrestlers (and non wrestlers) a Brother Love v2 could definitely work.

I believe it had something to do with this: Prime Time Wrestling - 1/28/91 - included Paul, an alleged blind man confined to a wheelchair, as a guest of the Brother Love Show in which Brother Love restored his sight and ability to walk.

No, no. They are still around. I mean, any guy with a storefront ministry, charisma and a camera can have their own show today. It's just the amount of power and wealth they obtained in the 1980s is just not comparable to today. They kinda fell off the radar, or suffered massive disgrace. They were a product of independent television and regional markets, and those have lost the significance they once had. Plus the whole, trying to avoid the scandals of the 1980s. Bishops have to be blameless, after all. I doubt a dated cultural parody would work as a modern gimmick, though. It would be like bringing back the headbangers.
