If I had a dollar for everytime a wrestling fan said that about John Felix Anthony Cena Jr., I'd buy the WWE and have enough cash left over for a new car.
That's wonderful for him, but I'm more of a fan of his character*, which I don't find particuarly cringe-worthy, and I don't understand why I'm supposed to be cringing.
"The character's jokes are immature."
Y'know, I think that John Cena the man has an immature sense of humor. There has been an increase in control of wrestler's promos over time, but I don't believe it's as dramatic as people think. I suspect a good chunk of the silly stuff he says comes from him rather than the writers. That may be why I never minded it.
"He brushes things off too much, he shouldn't be so polite."
Now this, on the other hand, is a product of the writing staff. Since he's been lauded as a bastion of being good natured regarding his critisism, sometimes it gets chucked into his monologues. Still, he's done his fair share of payback (see: Edge and the hotel incident, JBL's limo). If wrestling were real, Cena would probably be in a jail cell next to Austin. No, he wouldn't have the same amount of charges, but he'd be in the same cell.
"He outwits everyone, it's almost Bugs Bunny-esque."
No, he just gets angry and overpowers everyone. I don't see a lot of cleverness in action when Cena saves face at the end of a show. To me, Eddie Guerrero (as a babyface) was the most Bugs Bunny-ish wrestling character I've seen, what with his constant framing of heels during matches.
"He's like Superman at times."
I think that we've seen that before.
Cena didn't really warm up to me until the end of 2006, so I prefer this current incarnation to the Word Life version- which wasn't bad, but yeah.
* You'll notice that I never, NEVER once tried to use the "good for business" argument.
