So this past weekend was Homecoming week at my high school, which means spirit week. Well for the Seniors, Thursday was Toga Day. It's been a tradition for like 12 years, nothing wrong at any point. Well that seemed to change this year. All of a sudden, people were being sent to the office or sent home to change clothes left and right.
Why? Because apparently the togas revealed too much of girls' shoulders. Yes, you read that right. SHOULDERS. Now if that's not enough, here's the kicker: that has been absolutely fine in past years, AND there was never any notice stating against it! No flyers around the school, no announcement, nothing. It was disgusting, it was sad, it was pathetic, it was unnecessary. Are togas really THAT revealing? Seeing people sent to the office/home because of this crap made me sick.
It seems as if the grip of the hands of the administration is tightening around the neck of the students even more. My brother graduated in 2000, and my sister graduated in 2002. When I tell them some of the stuff that happens day to day, they are pretty much appalled. They say that it wasn't nearly as bad back then as it is now. My other brother is a sophomore right now, and I will hate to see what the school will be like when he becomes a senior in 2011. Our school is in a sorry state of affairs if somebody can't show their SHOULDERS. Last time I checked, this WAS America, yes?

Two things. 1) You're in High School so I assume you're under 18. You don't get any rights until 18. Well the good ones like voting and drinking. 2) This is America and Freedom isn't free.
Now before I get off on puritan values and what not, I'll just say this. I graduated in '98, girls couldn't wear 'speghetti' straps, and the seniors had like 12 official ditch days. You're friends could have worn what ever they wanted while hanging out. Just not at school.

That's odd... I've been out of high school for a long time but young girls dress like whores so much when I see them out anymore I figured it was just accepted in school too. You got it better from when I was in high school a decade ago cause young chicks are a lot hotter nowadays.

Eh, no one seemed to mind at Latin Day when I was in high school. Then again, I'm sure my friend wasn't the first to smuggle in alcohol... This is America and Freedom isn't free. There's a hefty in' fee...

You kids today don't know how good you have it. I remember when I was a kid. We didn't have girls. They were all played by boys.

Wait. Students have special theme days where they're allowed to wear TOGAS to school?
Wow. I lost out on the academic lottery again.

For example (sorry if this is religion and politics) my school was smackdab right in the middle of a small conservative Mennonite community. They did not allow any rap or rock music to be played in any school video package. If anything involving the school whatsoever was put on Youtube like a homecoming commercial. Without their permission you got a lunch detention. I had points taken off my grade in a class because I posted a note on facebook that my teacher said was disrespectful when it obviously wasn't (I didn't scold anybody I just asked why where we singing a certain song). And the school did not do a damn thing in helping me out. And our Superintendent was a grade "A" ASSHOLE! If you went to him with an idea he wouldn't even look at you in the face when he was talking to you like he was better than me or something. And then he wonders why the Bond issue failed to pass for the 3rd time gee I don't know, maybe because you did not ask the students to help considering we would get these rewards. Sorry I can go on for hours about how much I despised my High School, and it makes me jealous that other schools let their students do more things (that are legal of course).

Our school is in a sorry state of affairs if somebody can't show their SHOULDERS. Last time I checked, this WAS America, yes? Wait, wait... wait? Appalled that clothing is restricted during school? For minors. During a time when most of them may end up in a workplace that has a dresscode? The devil you say! Yes, let us simply allow for a unofficial dress up day to always exist. Regardless of complaints by a parent, or a teacher, or someone else. I will echo other sentiments, that essentially, this is high school, the rights and privileges you have now are at best a trial run for when you're no longer a dependent. Being appalled, but clothing restrictions are hardly big, and they are hardly the slippery slope to some neo-fascism. Realistically you're not even there to learn academic skills, because honestly, the school environment is a piss poor way to do it, hell grading hasn't actually been proven to aid in the learning process. You're there to learn to deal with authority figures effectively, and how to socialize with your peers. That said, life sucks, wear a cup.

High school in Kansas, it's classic. A friend of mine got in trouble, got a letter sent home, and his parents had to have a conference with the guidance counselor and principal because he was reading Nietzsche. Nevermind the fact that the school library had The Portable Nietzsche.

My school cracked down on gambling in the 6th form (senior year) common room. The edict was made while myself and friends were smoking cigarettes and I was swigging from a bottle of Glen Morangie.
So playing cards for 2 pence pieces = bad. Poisoning your body = A-OK!!

No more togas...
Is this the worst thing even happened to American School?
See, I've been hearing high school stories from people still in there over the last decade, and I guarantee you "revealing togas" are very much near the bottom of the "pressing issues" list.
The general level of schools is at its lowest point, with people graduating with embarrassingly poor knowledge, and an even worse behaviour.
My class did things that were "edgy" and over the top at that time, but now are ROUTINE and are topped every other day.
The difference is: we did stupid things in "special occasions" and we were treated as the black sheep of the school, nowadays kids just do it in a blissful state of obliviousness "ohh, is it wrong?"
So whatever, togas may not actually be too revealing, but probably there isn't a lot to reveal that hasn't been revealed already with low-waist jeans and floss-g-strings

Don't feel bad. In order to prevent kids from picking on each other for being poorer (and to prevent gangs from wearing their colors, despite the fact that we didn't have gangs) my former school district made a dress code where everyone had to wear fairly expensive uniforms.

Sort of like that here, when I was still in highschool, only it was just polo shirts and slacks, and was actually more obvious than ever what clothes were cheap and what was expensive. American Eagle and Abercrombie, yeah, that's not gonna stand out against polo shirts that appear to be made out of burlap.
