It was never going to be easy for Willy. He was the odd one out of the bunch, looking entirely unlike what a dachshund should look like. He stuck out immediately, as the biggest pup, with a fur coloring entirely unlike normal dachshunds. He looked way more like a Basset Hound, really. That was alright, though. While his 5 brothers and sisters were adopted quickly, he managed to get adopted first, with his exceptional appearance and dopey appeal. I was happy for him, but knew he was unusual, and that he would likely need close attention. I was correct. See, Willy was born, to my sad realization, with birth defects. He is a double dapple dachshund, which, while sought after by some, are prone to serious health problems. He will quite likely be blind and deaf, vets say, and I desperately hope his new owner has the patience and compassion to handle that responsibility. Dogs have lost homes over much less. I hate to bum people out, or tell them something they don't give a rat's ass about, but I needed to talk about it. I just recently found out about his problems, and the fact there's virtually nothing I can do to help. Have any of you had anything like this to a pet, and how did you handle it? If any of you feel the need for any heartless jokes about it, by all means, show some dignity and keep it to yourself. I don't expect anyone to be that cruel on here, but I'm not in the mood for any of that crap.

The little dude is adorable.
Sucks about the birth defects though.

I know. He was always adorable. He was just kind of goofy from day one. He would cry a lot unless you held him or he put him up close to his mama.
I don't know if he's entirely blind, since he'd react when I put things in front of him. Hopefully his problems are treatable.
If not, I know some dogs live perfectly fine blind, but the deafness in combination with it worries me.

UPDATE: Willy's ear problems are considered a possibility, but he currently hear alright, it's just something to look out for. I was led to believe he was currently deaf, so this is a little better.
Also, his eye problems are somewhat treatable, in that they will apparently fit him for "dog glasses". I have never hear of such a thing. Unusual, but great if it can help him.
