So, I caught the CMA's last night and marveled at the return of the sports coat paired with jeans look (originally worn by Zack Morris in the two-part episode of Saved by the Bell when the gang goes to Palm Springs for Jessie's father's wedding) that many of the country and western gents were rocking. And I got to wondering, does this look work with just any old sport coat? Like many 'Crappers, I own but one sport coat that is reserved for special occasions (weddings, funerals, job interviews, etc.), but if I can break it out for social gatherings, it'll gain a whole new life!
Any information/advice is appreciated.

Ron, it never hurts to look good! You'll even score points with the ladies if you complete the ensemble!
Just don't mention Second Life, and you'll be solid.

Works best with white tennis shoes.

Saved by the Bell certainly didn't introduce this.
That being said, if you're not going anywhere formal, it should be fine. I would encourage you to NEVER wear jeans if you care to be taken seriously in anything over "casual" settings.

The sports coat/jeans/t-shirt combo has been around since like '01.

It's been around significantly longer than that. I can recall seeing many, many country & western singers rocking a sport coat and jeans on a reasonably regular basis from stuff from the early '80s and even the late '70s. It just strikes me as being a bit trendier with the youngins at this point.

Yeah, I like it. I wear bluejeans, a black/greyish pinstriped coat, and Chucks or Vans. It's a good look imo.

Also just to note:
I have this weird coat that's somewhere between a sportcoat and a normal zippered jacket. It's like the El Camino of jackets.

To me it just looks stupid. It looks like you're a little kid playing dress up in your dad's laundry.

It never lost popularity in many circles. Stand up comedians in the late '80s and early '90s seemed to live in jeans and sport coats. It was also reasonably prevalent on sitcoms.
